Novak Djokovic Dazzles Fans in Tommy Paul Win to Advance to Australian Open Final

Joseph ZuckerJan 27, 2023

Novak Djokovic is one win away from a 10th Australian Open title after beating Tommy Paul in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1, 6-2, in the semifinal.

Paul pushed the No. 4 seed hard in the first set after falling behind 1-5. A pair of service breaks helped him level the frame at five games apiece.

Djokovic bounced back to hold serve and go ahead 6-5 before breaking Paul's serve to claim the set. From there, it was smooth sailing.

The 21-time Grand Slam champion seemed to need the wake-up call.

Twenty-four of his 39 unforced errors came in the first set. By the third set, he was firing on all cylinders. He had an 11-3 edge on Paul in winners and won 17 of his 21 service points. Paul simply had no counter when Djokovic broke out of his early funk.

Djokovic has dropped just one set across the entire tournament. It might be a matter of days before Rafael Nadal has company atop the all-time Grand Slam wins leaderboard.

Third-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas awaits in the final after he took down No. 18 Karen Khachanov in four sets.

Djokovic has a 10-2 head-to-head advantage over the 24-year-old Greek. Tsitsipas' last win came in 2019 at the Rolex Shanghai Masters. He has dropped nine in a row to the legendary Serb.

Tsitsipas should present Djokovic with a tougher encounter than he had in the semis, but he heads into Sunday as the clear underdog.
