6 Possible Landing Spots for Green Bay Packers' Matt Flynn
It seems that some of the great quarterbacks in the NFL come from the land of Wisconsin.
While Brett Favre broke records and lit up scoreboards for years, the likes of Matt Hasselbeck, Mark Brunell and some guy named Kurt Warner were at one time or another on the Packers roster, only to be traded or picked up by another team.
Then, the Green Bay brass plucked Aaron Rodgers in the draft to at some point replace the Mississippi gunslinger, and he has proved to be the best at his position since assuming the role of starter.
Today, we saw another great passer in Matt Flynn, a seventh-round selection by the Packers in 2008. All Flynn did was throw for 480 yards and six touchdowns in a 45-41 win over Detroit and give Green Bay a 15-1 record this year.
Could Flynn be a player teams look to in the offseason instead of taking a chance on the upcoming draft class? Could Flynn be a Matt Cassel or even better? Does a team that needs a new passer but will not have a shot at Andrew Luck or Robert Griffin III call and inquire what it would take to bring Flynn out of Wisconsin and into a starting lineup near you?
Here are six teams who could use Flynn's services next season.
Washington Redskins
1 of 6This is the kind of move that maybe gets Mike Shanahan more time in Washington.
The Redskins have had so many issues at quarterback this season. Rex Grossman and John Beck are not long-term NFL starters.
Would Daniel Snyder, who has been known to reach into his deep pockets, try and pry Flynn away and bring him to the nation's capitol?
Snyder would also need to find Flynn some more receivers as well.
Cleveland Browns
2 of 6Team president, Mike Holmgren had Brett Favre playing for him when the Packers won a Super Bowl under his watch.
Could he try and bring in another Green Bay passer?
Colt McCoy, Seneca Wallace or anyone else on the Browns roster does not strike fear in opposing defenses. If head coach Pat Shurmur is to last another season in Ohio, the team may need to bring in another option to put the ball in the end zone.
Jacksonville Jaguars
3 of 6They drafted Blaine Gabbert with the 10th pick in the 2011 draft.
The team is still waiting for a return on its investment.
While this was a team in turmoil all season, new owner Shahid Khan may look to a veteran to come in and shake things up.
Flynn would benefit from a young team trying to make the leap to respectability and in a division that may have a new passer in Tennessee (Jake Locker) and Indianapolis (Andrew Luck), the Jaguars are a quarterback and two receivers away from being decent next year.
Miami Dolphins
4 of 6This team could be pretty good next season. And the Dolphins will take a long hard look at trying to secure the services of a quarterback in the draft.
But getting Flynn does a few things for this team. It means they can take their first pick, a possible top-10 selection and choose another area of need (receiver, defensive line).
It also means it gives receiver Brandon Marshall and runner Reggie Bush another offensive weapon they can work with.
New York Jets
5 of 6Mark Sanchez is hot and cold in the hottest sports city in football.
Could Flynn take New York to the "Promised Land?"
After being in the AFC championship game the past two years, the former USC passer has had his struggles this year.
Is it time for Rex Ryan and the Jets to pull the plug on this experiment?
Does Flynn make Santonio Holmes, Dustin Keller and Shonn Greene better players?
Dallas Cowboys
6 of 6This is just a thought.
But, it is Jerry Jones who is the triggerman for the Cowboys and with all the controversy/injuries to Tony Romo this season, does the owner, general manager, all everything for the team make a huge splash and bring in the Green Bay backup?
Romo is still a good option behind center, but maybe Flynn is a better option.
