Bowl Predictions 2022: Updated Playoff CFP Projections Heading Into Week 10

Jake RillOct 30, 2022

Georgia had little trouble in its 42-20 win over Florida in Jacksonville on Saturday. Tennessee cruised in its 44-6 home victory over Kentucky. And now, a marquee SEC matchup is set up for Week 10.

This upcoming Saturday, the No. 1 Bulldogs will host the No. 2 Vols in a game that could determine who finishes first in the SEC East and makes it to the conference championship game. It's also a contest featuring a pair of teams that could make it to the College Football Playoff this season.

There's a good chance that one of Georgia or Tennessee goes undefeated while winning the SEC title, with the other only suffering one loss (in the matchup featuring both teams). If that's the case, could both end up in the CFP?

It's possible, but a lot could still change between now and the end of November. But let's take a look at how things currently stand with updated College Football Playoff projections.

College Football Playoff Projections

Peach Bowl: No. 1 Georgia vs. No. 4 Tennessee

Fiesta Bowl: No. 2 Ohio State vs. No. 3 Clemson

The CFP projections heading into Week 10 are the same as they were heading into Week 9. That's because nothing that happened over the weekend changed the status of these top teams.

Georgia improved to 8-0 with its win over Florida and remains the top team in the nation. If the Bulldogs beat Tennessee in Week 10, they'll likely still be undefeated when they reach the SEC championship game, as their final three regular-season games are against Mississippi State, Kentucky and Georgia Tech.

As for the Vols, they also have a light schedule following the upcoming game at Georgia. After that, they close out the regular season with a trio of SEC matchups against Missouri, South Carolina and Vanderbilt.

Clemson had its bye in Week 9, so it stayed at 8-0. While the Tigers were idle, some of the other top teams in the ACC fell. No. 10 Wake Forest lost to Louisville, while No. 16 Syracuse fell against Notre Dame.

It seems highly probable that Clemson will go on to become the undefeated ACC champions. The Tigers play Notre Dame, Louisville, Miami and South Carolina over the next four weeks before their probable appearance in the ACC championship game.

The biggest Big Ten matchup of the year doesn't happen until the final week of the regular season. That's when No. 2 Ohio State will host No. 4 Michigan in a matchup that should decide which team finishes first in the Big Ten East and makes it to the conference championship game.

Not only that, but the Buckeyes-Wolverines contest could be for a spot in the College Football Playoff. Of course, there will also be a case to be made for both to reach the CFP if the two teams are in a similar position to the one that Georgia and Tennessee could be in.

Among the teams currently outside of a playoff spot that could still play its way in are No. 6 Alabama, No. 7 TCU and No. 8 Oregon. Of those three, the Horned Frogs are the only one that remains undefeated, but the Crimson Tide and Ducks each have the potential to become one-loss conference champions.

Unless some of these front-runners suffer upset losses over the next few weeks, the College Football Playoff picture may not change too much. Still, it's going to be fun to watch Georgia and Tennessee go head-to-head in a game that could have strong CFP implications, even if both schools end up eventually getting in.
