2011 Sun Bowl: Rush Defense Won't Save Utah vs. Georgia Tech
Utah may be 7-5 and coming off a loss to Colorado, but the Utes have a few advantages against Georgia Tech that could tip the scale in the Sun Bowl on Saturday.
For one, Utah is ranked ninth against the run in the nation, which will be particularly helpful against Georgia Tech's second-ranked running game. The Yellow Jackets are averaging 316.8 rushing yards per game this season.
Utah will also have 27 days to prepare for Georgia Tech's complex offensive schemes. What makes Georgia Tech's rushing attack so hard to beat is its fakes and option plays.
However, in the end, Georgia Tech's offense will still be too difficult to stop.
Running backs David Sims and Orwin Smith have rushed for a combined 1,314 yards, while junior quarterback Tevin Washington leads the team with 890 rushing yards. Altogether, they've combined for 32 rushing touchdowns.
Even with the added preparation, I expect Utah's defense to struggle against Georgia Tech's various looks. Even if you study extensive film on this team, they have so many ways to beat you. They aren't limited to just a few players on offense.
On top of this, Georgia Tech just played then-No. 13 Georgia, and the added experience will make Utah look mild in comparison. Georgia Tech looks stronger as a whole headed into this matchup.
You also have the fact that Utah may have trouble keeping up with Georgia Tech's offense. Utah has averaged 24.6 points per game this season, ranked 78th in the country.
This should be a fun game to watch, featuring Georgia Tech's rushing attack and Utes running back John White IV.
However, Georgia Tech will pull away in the end.
