BCS Bowl Projections 2012: Why the ACC Is Just as Bad as the Big East

T.J. McaloonDec 29, 2011

There are the conferences that excel when they are placed in a BCS bowl game—the SEC, Big Ten and Big 12. Then there are the conferences that are awful in these high-stakes games—the ACC and Big East.

However, unlike previous years, the Big East or the ACC will finally see a BCS win, since the conferences play each other in the Orange Bowl.

The ACC’s record in BCS bowl games is 2-11, which is the lowest win total among the BCS conferences with at least five BCS bowl games played.

It seems like every year, the ACC sends Virginia Tech out there to get slaughtered. Their 1-3 record has seen the Hokies get outscored 80-46 in one Sugar Bowl and two Orange Bowls.

They have a chance to improve their BCS record to 2-3 if they can beat Michigan in the Sugar Bowl.

However, as history has shown us, that is asking a lot of Virginia Tech.

The Big East is Just as Bad

The second-lowest win total belongs to the Big East, with a record of 6-7.

Since the BCS bowl games began in the 1998-99 season, the Big East has half of its wins coming from the Miami Hurricanes, before they left for the ACC.

After that, only the West Virginia Mountaineers have a winning record. Their game against the Clemson Tigers is the Mountaineers' third BCS bowl game, after successful trips to the Sugar Bowl and the Fiesta Bowl.

After that, the Big East has gone 1-5, with only the Louisville Cardinals getting a bowl victory in the 2007 Orange Bowl over ACC member Wake Forest.

Which Conference is The Worst?

For as much flack as the Big East gets from the public about how bad the conference is, they have not been as bad as the ACC. The ACC has not won a National Championship since 1998, and it does not look like they have a chance to win one anytime soon.

This year, Virginia Tech’s defense will be overwhelmed by Denard Robinson and the speed of Michigan’s offense. While Clemson will have no answer for West Virginia QB Geno Smith’s ability to rip a defense apart.

The ACC will see its losing streak continue after failing to win its next two BCS bowl games.
