2011 Bowl Games: 4 Showdowns That Will Be Dominated by Offense
The 2011 bowl season is well under way, and we’ve seen some awesome matchups and a few boring ones as well.
Fortunately, there are still plenty of games left and some of them are going to be exploding with high-powered offensive attacks.
Here are four contests you need to see if you are a fan of huge plays, big numbers and tons of touchdowns.
Alamo Bowl: Washington vs. Baylor
1 of 4The Baylor Bears really got screwed when they found they were matching up against the Washington Huskies in a pre-New Year's Day bowl game.
They deserved better than a 7-5 opponent after having a 9-3 season in a brutal Big 12 saw them finish No. 12 in the BCS rankings.
Look for Robert Griffin III to lead them to victory with a dominant performance using his legs and arms and showing why he was the Heisman winner in 2011.
Their suspect defense will give up some yards and scores—especially on the ground—to the Huskies, so expect an offensive shootout in which Baylor comes out ahead.
Cotton Bowl: Kansas State vs. Arkansas
2 of 4This game is proof that the BCS system is broken and, at the very least, should consider the historically rich Cotton Bowl as one of the major BCS bowl games.
It’s just insane that teams from the two most powerful conferences ranked No. 6 and 8 in the final standings were passed over in favor of teams that had less successful seasons.
With that said, this game is going to be a barn burner.
K-State averages over 33 points a game, while Arkansas has been putting up 37.4 per game against tough defenses. Neither team is particularly excellent at stopping opposing offenses, and both rank near the middle of the pack in FBS play.
Each program is also motivated to run the score up and crush their opponent, proving it was a farce they were passed over by the BCS selection committee.
Rose Bowl: Wisconsin vs. Oregon
3 of 4If you want to see offense, you must tune in to this season’s Rose Bowl.
You’ll be treated to the No. 3 and No. 4 scoring offenses in the nation trading blows throughout the night in Pasadena.
Both teams can straight up pound the rock on the ground, and it’s highly doubtful either defense is going to consistently get stops against these machines.
Make sure you keep an eye on Montee Ball, Wisconsin’s beastly RB who has 32 touchdowns on the season and has not been contained, and LaMichael James, an absolute animal who averages nearly 7.5 yards per carry and has blinding speed.
The QB play also contributes to these eye-popping rushing figures. Russell Wilson and Darron Thomas both have the ability to make plays with their feet and will take off if they see an opening.
It would be an absolute shock if this game didn’t have a point total above 80 when all is said and done.
Fiesta Bowl: Stanford vs. Oklahoma State
4 of 4This may be the highest-scoring bowl game this season and could very well break the 2001 GMAC Bowl’s record of 125 total points scored.
Stanford possesses the No. 6 scoring offense and, overall, a very respectable and balanced offense. The Pokes come in rocking the No. 2 passing and scoring attack in the country.
These teams also possess extra motivation to go at each other’s throats.
The BCS voters and computers snubbed them after their one-loss seasons in favor of Alabama for the right to play LSU in the BCS National Title Game.
Neither team will let off the gas in this one and it will without a doubt be one of the most exciting games of the year.
