Alamo Bowl 2011: Washington Huskies vs. Baylor Bears Won't Feature Much Defense
It's going to be hard for any bowl game to top the offensive outburst that we saw in the Military Bowl. Toledo and Air Force combined for 746 total yards and 83 points. It was a back-and-forth struggle from start to finish.
Yes sir, it's going to be hard to top that.
But, the Alamo Bowl between the Washington Huskies and Baylor Bears is going to do it. What you're going to see are two explosive offenses, and two utterly atrocious defenses.
The numbers do a good job of telling the story. The Huskies allowed 33.3 points per game this season, a figure that ranked 99th in the country. They also allowed over 425 total yards per game.
The Bears weren't much better. They allowed 35.7 points per game, a figure good enough for 109th in the country. They allowed over 475 yards per game.
As for how the Huskies and Bears could achieve such horrible defensive numbers, it just so happens that both teams have a common Achilles heel: Pass defense.
Playing in a pass-happy Pac-12, Washington allowed a staggering 283.8 passing yards per game this season. That gave them the 116th-ranked pass defense in the nation.
As for Baylor, the Bears allowed 278.8 passing yards per game this season. That was good for 112th in the nation.
Long story short, Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III and talented Sophomore Keith Price should be licking their chops right about now.
You probably know everything there is to know about RG3. He finished two yards shy of 4,000 passing yards this season, and he also had 36 touchdowns and just six interceptions.
He passed for at least 300 yards in nine different games, and had more than one touchdown passes in all but three of the games he played in.
When you put up numbers like these, you get a Heisman Trophy.
But don't sleep on Keith Price. He wasn't nearly as efficient as RG3 this season, but he did have 29 touchdown passes and just 11 picks. He demonstrated on a number of occasions that he is more than capable of taking over a game.
Of course, both Washington and Baylor have star running backs that deserve some love too. Washington's Chris Polk is one of the best and most underappreciated running backs in the country. Terrance Ganaway's great season got lost in the shuffle of RG3's Heisman Trophy campaign.
So if you're looking for offense, you'll find more than enough in the Alamo Bowl.
If you're looking for defense, I recommend staying patient until the BCS National Championship rolls around.
