Now that we know LeBron James is headed to the Philadelphia 76ers, we can turn our attention to the upcoming season.

With Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, Jaylen Brown, LeBron and Joel Embiid, Philly has one of the best starting fives in the league.

The bench, with Anfernee Simons and Dean Wade, has a chance to be solid, too.

There are certainly concerns with LeBron's age, Embiid's health and everyone's usage. But the Sixers spent this summer going from possible play-in team to bona fide title contender.

At the very least, they've given themselves a shot at winning LeBron's fifth title and Embiid's first.

If he wants to win a championship, Draymond Green could come to a similar sort of conclusion as LeBron.

The Warriors aren't even a lock to make the play-in, and that's assuming Draymond is there.

If he realizes that before re-signing, ring chasing with a contender could be in play for Draymond. And as he's made us well aware over the years, he has a deep admiration for LeBron.

A Philadelphia bench with Green, Anfernee Simons and Dean Wade could be dangerous.

Philly fans are understandably pumped up to have LeBron James on their team. Within hours of the news breaking, Fanatics sold out of his jersey.

We touched on this earlier in the live blog, but it seems like LeBron's desire to do something new was a key component of his decision this time around.

And for good measure, if he does pull off his fifth championship, it'll give him yet another record.

No player in NBA history has ever won championships with at least four different franchises. LeBron is currently stuck on three and tied with several other players for the most ever.

Even if they'd landed LeBron James, the Golden State Warriors figured to be a pretty long shot to compete for the 2026-27 title.

Without him, they might be a long shot to make the play-in tournament.

The lack of reliable talent beyond 38-year-old Stephen Curry and 36-year-old Draymond Green (who's still unsigned and might not even qualify for the "reliable" label anymore) is startling.

Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody could miss the entire season. Kristaps Porziņģis' health may be as big a question mark as Embiid's, at this point. Al Horford is 40.

There's a very real chance Curry's twilight is spent entirely on a lottery team.

The Philadelphia 76ers now present some of the toughest matchup questions in the league.

The best interior defender obviously has to be assigned to Joel Embiid, but after that, there are four dangerous perimeter players to deal with.

Every night, one of LeBron, Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown or VJ Edgecombe will get a chance to attack the opposition's weakest starting link. And all four are capable of dominating that level of defender.

There's no question LeBron James' presence on the Los Angeles Lakers roster led to the organization's decision to draft his son.

So, now that LeBron is headed to the Philadelphia 76ers, it's fair to at least wonder what the Lakers will do with his son.

Well, for now, it looks like he'll be sticking with L.A. for the foreseeable future. Bronny hasn't proven capable of rotation minutes yet, but the Lakers have invested plenty of developmental time and effort in him. And it makes sense for the organization to see that through.

In LeBron's X post confirming his departure for Philadelphia, he wrote, "This is my last decision." And there's really no way to interpret that outside of thinking this is the last contract he'll sign.

There's a player option after this first season, so the door may be open a crack. But if things go poorly enough for LeBron to leave after a year, and in consideration of all the retirement talk he threw into that same post, you'd think he'd just call it a career after 2026-27.

In all likelihood, this is indeed LeBron's "last decision," and the 76ers are therefore the last stop in his legendary career.

Joel Embiid has been an NBA player since 2014. He won the MVP in 2023. He's one of the best scorers in league history.

But to this point, he's still never made it any further than the second round of the playoffs. And that may have been weighing on him this offseason, because he was reportedly among the primary recruiters for LeBron.

Contrary to the thought that Philly's best player may have been concerned about sharing possessions with another ball-dominant star, Embiid must understand the value LeBron could potentially add as a passer and leader.

James, of course, has taken that step beyond the second round a dozen times. He knows what it takes to get there. And his playmaking will be a crucial ingredient for the Sixers to do the same.

Most importantly, he'll make Embiid's life easier. Beyond just setting him up for open looks all over the floor (which he'll do), LeBron will take a ton of the external pressure to win off Embiid's shoulders.

If they figure out how to share it, there's a very real chance this team wins the title.

There was a lot of discussion about LeBron's desire to stay near his family in California (a selling point for the Warriors), and the decision to go to Philadelphia obviously doesn't check that box.

Fortunately, in today's world and with LeBron's resources, he can maintain his home base pretty much anywhere.

And when he's in Philadelphia for games, Sixers fans can surely expect his best.

The Timberwolves certainly would've been better with LeBron James starting alongside Jaden McDaniels and Rudy Gobert in the frontcourt, but they should be in pretty good shape without him.

They've been in the conference finals twice in recent years, and LaMelo Ball is a comfortable talent upgrade over Julius Randle.

That and Anthony Edwards' demeanor (described above) will keep the Timberwolves in the mix with the league's biggest contenders.

The Heat and Timberwolves already did enough this offseason to improve, regardless of LeBron's choice, but the Warriors, Cavs and Nuggets (to the extent they were ever in the mix) are going to be scrambling now.

To no one's surprise, the news of LeBron James joining the Philadelphia 76ers made them a shorter bet to win the NBA Finals.

On talent alone, it's hard to find many starting fives definitively better than one with Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, Jaylen Brown, LeBron and Joel Embiid.

Of course, LeBron's age and Embiid's durability are major concerns, but Philadelphia now has a very real shot to win the East.

LeBron James is still the biggest name in men's basketball, so it seems fitting that the biggest name in women's basketball would react to today's shocking news.

Shortly after news of LeBron James' decision to join the Philadelphia 76ers broke, he took to Instagram to post a hype video.

And regardless of what you might think about what LeBron has left in the tank, this is a move that is well worth some hype.

Beyond the fact that a top two player in league history is changing teams, LeBron is still playing like, at worst, a fringe All-Star. And getting that level of player for the veteran minimum is the kind of move that could swing a title race.

There may be an argument that VJ Edgecombe's development could be stunted by starting alongside four ball-dominant stars, but his eventual rise to stardom still feels like one of the safer bets in the league.

Even if his usage is reduced a bit in the short term, Edgecombe now gets the closest possible seat to LeBron's playmaking. He'll grow from his tutelage. And even if his on-ball opportunities are limited a bit, they'll often come against the fifth best defender in the opposition's lineup.

Those factors and Edgecombe's competitiveness should absolutely keep him on a steep upward trajectory.

Now, just over 10 years after he said this (and 12 years after this apparent earlier pursuit of LeBron), Embiid and James are finally teammates.

And while there are real questions about the division of labor between LeBron, Maxey and Brown, the direct fit between LeBron and Embiid seems pretty obvious.

Few pairings across NBA history make more sense than the superstar playmaker with the superstar big. There's Oscar Robertson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Kareem and Magic Johnson, John Stockton and Karl Malone and Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal.

LeBron and Embiid, though both are past their primes, could be the next link in that chain.

You have to think that the 76ers acquiring Brown earlier this summer was a factor in LeBron's decision.

Within weeks of him landing there, James chose Philadelphia in one of the more shocking free-agency moves we've ever seen.

Now, these two, both of whom have spent plenty of time with the ball in their hands, will have to figure out how to coexist.

There were going to be some fit concerns regardless of where LeBron went. Miami would've been short on shooting. Golden State would've been too old. Depending on what happens with James Harden, there may have been too much usage in Cleveland.

And while that last potential issue certainly presents itself in Philadelphia (as Dean Oliver points out above), LeBron may be exactly the kind of playmaker who can tie it all together.

He already proved over the last couple seasons that he can step back a bit for younger stars, and his passing could boost the efficiency of Brown and Edgecombe. He'll obviously take some pressure off of Embiid and Maxey too.

There will be a learning curve, for sure. But in terms of pure talent, this roster is loaded.

For at least the last week, the Miami Heat and Cleveland Cavaliers were way out in front of the rest of the field in prediction markets. And obviously, both of those organizations have enjoyed LeBron's talents in the past.

So, winning a title at either spot would've kept him at championships with three different franchises.

Going to Philly, where he absolutely has a shot at a championship, opens up the possibility of winning one for a fourth franchise.

That has never been done in NBA history.

Three-plus weeks into LeBron James' free agency, and we have a decision from LeBron James!

In maybe the most shocking move of the summer, and in direct contradiction of what prediction markets have been telling us for quite some time, it's the Philadelphia 76ers who've won the LeBron James' sweepstakes.

He now joins Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, Jaylen Brown and Joel Embiid for a run at a title in the Eastern Conference.

SiriusXM's Eddie Johnson posits an interesting theory above, but in today's NBA and media landscape, it's a tough one to fully buy.

There are so many sources and well-sourced reporters out there. Keeping this tight a lid on a decision of this magnitude for more than a few hours would be a monumental task.

Of course, it's not impossible. If only the most important people in the process were clued in, you might be able to get away with this. But it feels like LeBron truly hasn't made his call yet.

Reporting has been all over the map throughout this LeBron free agency. Writers and their sources can run wild when you give them almost a month to speculate or hunt for speculation.

At various times in the last few weeks, we've heard LeBron made up his mind and then changed it, was frustrated with Adam Silver being frustrated with him, was waiting for some team to land Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving and was not waiting for any other dominos to fall.

At this point, it's next to impossible to know exactly what's going on. But that hasn't kept some of our best reporters from trying.

The latest comes from ESPN's Vincent Goodwill, who revisited the "LeBron wants a reunion" genre.

On that front, he wrote, "League sources said James had been angling for former teammate Irving to join him in Cleveland, but the Dallas Mavericks have had no interest in engaging the Cavaliers in a trade, and Irving is believed to be comfortable where he is."

So, this doesn't really clue us into the final result, but it is further evidence that LeBron could indeed be playing general manager, something he's done plenty of times over the course of his career.

Beyond the obvious, "because it's LeBron James," there are plenty of reasons his free agency is generating the kind of attention it is.

Chief among them may be the fact that LeBron is still a top 30-40 player (or at least he was last season). And if he really is willing to play on a veteran minimum deal or on some portion of the mid-level exception, he'd be one of the best values in the NBA.

In 2025-26, when Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves were both off the floor, LeBron averaged 28.3 points and 10.4 assists per 75 possessions, with a near-average true shooting percentage. And the Lakers had a plus-7.9 net rating in those minutes.

In other words, even if his overall production may have dipped a bit on a team with two ball-dominant guards, LeBron is still capable of carrying teams to winning basketball.

And on any of the teams that are still in the mix, though he may be limited by other stars similarly to how he was in Los Angeles, James could have a massive impact.
