WWE Rumors: CM Punk, Chris Jericho and Monday's Top WWE News

Adam WellsDec 26, 2011

WWE will close out the year with what will hopefully be another fun edition of Raw. The show takes place from CM Punk's backyard of Rosemont, Illinois.

While there may be some build to the Royal Rumble, I would expect tonight's show to be just a filler episode like we got last week, which is fine by me, because last week's show was a significant improvement over what we have been getting.

Hopefully Vince McMahon and the rest of the booking team don't try to get too cute by using a lot of Christmas gimmicks tonight and just allow the show to be normal. But with the McMahon family, as we all know, nothing is normal.

We will have the latest news, rumors and updates from the world of WWE and some tidbits from the wide world of professional wrestling.

CM PUNK CONTINUES TO PRESS STEVE AUSTIN FOR A WRESTLEMANIA MATCH

While even he admits that it shouldn't happen this year, WWE champion CM Punk did an interview about who is WrestleMania opponent will be, he said that in an ideal world he would like it to be Austin.

Question on Everybody's Mind: Does Austin have enough left in the tank for one more match?

Our Take: There seems to be a thinking that Austin will come back, it is just a matter of if not when. I think that under the right circumstances, with the right opponent the match can be fantastic. But nine years, or 10 if it happens in 2013, is a long time to be away.

Hype Meter: 5 out of 5 Returns Still Being Teased

Even if it never ends up happening, the idea of Austin returning to the ring has been a hot-button issue since it was teased after WrestleMania last year. With Punk talking about it any chance he gets, I would expect something to develop in 2013.

CHRIS JERICHO FUELS THE RUMORS

A big reason that everyone has figured out that Jericho is the "It Begins" star—or at least we assume we have figured it out—is because of the way that he keeps denying it on Twitter. He used to get asked WWE questions all the time and would have fun with them. Now, he is just angry, which anyone who has followed him on the social media site knows is not his normal personality.

Jericho Twitter Rant of the Evening:

Question on Everybody's Mind: Why does Jericho keep talking about this?

Our Take: He is a fan of surprises, so when he does eventually show up, he wants it to be a shock. The sad part is, in this day and age, it is almost impossible for anything to be a surprise.

Hype Meter: 5 out of 5 Surprise Returns That Aren't Actually Surprises

I can appreciate Jericho trying to keep us in the dark, because surprises in wrestling are fun, but what makes me—and presumably all of you—excited is just the idea of seeing him back in a ring.

GOLDUST WANTS A FAMILY FEUD AT WRESTLEMANIA

Goldust has not been a regular performer on WWE television for a long time. He has spent most of his time working as an agent in the back, but he is reportedly working officials for a WrestleMania match with his brother, Cody Rhodes.

Question on Everybody's Mind: Will WWE put Goldust in a WrestleMania match?

Our Take: If it happens, I would suspect that it will be one of those lame gimmick matches that WWE always has to put on the show. It would be a waste of Cody Rhodes to put him in a match with someone who means nothing.

Hype Meter: 3 out of 5 Goldust Shoot Promos In His House

If Goldust were still a regular performer, that would be one thing. But since he has spent most of the last three years in the back, and the fact that he is a comedy character at this point, I have no idea why he thinks he would be considered for a mid-card match on the biggest show of the year.

THE HEADBANGERS BEGGING VINCE MCMAHON FOR RETURN TO WWE

For those of you who were fans of WWE during the Attitude Era, you should remember the Headbangers, Mosh and Thrasher. They haven't worked for the company in over a decade, but are doing all they can to let Vince McMahon know they are interested.

Question on Everybody's Mind: Will WWE bring back the Headbangers?

Our Take: Something tells me that this is a long shot. WWE does not think highly of them, and the fact that Vince hates tag-team wrestling does not bode well for them.

Hype Meter: 3 out of 5 Sad Wrestlers Desperate For Work

I can appreciate what they are trying to do, but perhaps they should focus more on trying to get WWE to notice what they can do in the ring, as opposed to wasting their time with stupid YouTube videos.

OLD ECW ARENA WILL BE NO MORE

ECW was never my favorite wrestling promotion, mainly because it had to rely on gimmicks to get over. But the fact that the old Asylum Arena that used to host so many of the promotions events will not be used for wrestling is a shame.

Question on Everybody's Mind: Will ECW's legacy die with the arena?

Our Take: I think that ECW's legacy took a hit when Vince McMahon brought it back and WWE'd the whole thing up. Paul Heyman has made a great career for himself after ECW, so at least he was able to pick up the pieces after his promotion folded.

Hype Meter: 4 out of 5 Old Wrestling Landmarks That Are Going Bye-Bye

Wrestling fans are obsessed with the past even more than they are the present or the future, which is a big problem with today's WWE product. At Dragon Gate USA knows how to put on a great show and will do right by the arena for its final wrestling event.
