NBA Rumors: Why the Timberwolves Need to Lock Kevin Love Up to an Extension

Kelly ScalettaDec 22, 2011

The Minnesota Timberwolves are contemplating extending Kevin Love a max contract offer. They have an easy decision to make. This lands on the "easy" spectrum right next to "Should I take another breath?" It's an obvious answer and for obvious reasons you don't want to take too much time thinking about the answer.

In entire history of the NBA three players have ever averaged 20 points and 15 rebounds a game at 22 or younger.

Two of them are Bob McAdoo in '73-'74 with the Buffalo Braves and Walt Bellamy did it in the '62 season with the inexplicably named "Chicago Packers." Ironically neither team lasted much longer in their original cities.

We won't read too much into that though.

What we do know is that both players now are in the Hall of Fame.

The other was Kevin Love last year.

Love has a great chance to follow the other two and he's already laid good claim to the second greatest player in franchise history.

A player like Love, you show the love. The T' Wolves need not look further than about a seven-hour drive to the southeast, where the Bulls just signed Derrick Rose, Love's workout partner, to a max deal.

The Timberwolves won't even have to pay him as much.

There isn't a single good reason to even think about this. The only question they have to contemplate is why the contract is not already written up.
