NFL Playoff Scenarios: How Kyle Orton and the Chiefs Can Steal the AFC West
The Denver Broncos worst nightmare is still in play.
After pulling Kyle Orton after only five games, they banished him to the bench to be a first hand witness to Tebowmania for five games.
Finally, they granted his release and Orton ended up with the Kansas City Chiefs. After injuring his finger on his very first play against another former team in the Bears, it looked like his season, and the Chiefs were all but over.
A miracle hail mary against Chicago and a win over the Packers later and the Kansas City faithful still have reason to care.
Football Outsiders give the Chiefs a whopping eight-percent chance of making the playoffs. So how do they get there with only two games left?
To make it a little less complicated, here is the remaining schedule for an AFC West division that has yet to eliminate a team from the race:
Chiefs - Oakland, @Denver;
Raiders - @Kansas City, San Diego; and,
Broncos - @Buffalo, Kansas City.
Here’s what you need to know:
1. The Chiefs are out of the wild card race, so winning the division is the only possible way to sneak in.
2. KC must win their final two games
3. The Bills have to beat the Broncos on Saturday.
4. The Chargers must lose one of their last two games.
This is certainly in the realm of possibilities. Going across the country to play a team that typically plays hard at home is no gimme for the Broncos and the Chargers have two road games against potential playoff teams.
Reading this has to get Bronco fans nervous. This scenario seems like it deserves a much better shot of occurring than eight-percent.
Can you imagine the madness that would ensue if it’s Orton vs Tebow with a division championship on the line?
It would be one of the greatest regular season finales of all time. And it’s a realistic scenario!
Stay positive Chief fans, this season is far from over.
