Don Nelson and Keith Smart it is Time for Your Pink Slips or Resignation Letters
When a team loses to the Oklahoma City Thunder specifically a team that is trying to get back to respectability after a slow start it's time for a change. After the game against the Thunder it's clear that both Don Nelson and Keith Smart need to be fired.
Why? The Warriors need a coach who is going to have them play defense. Neither Nelson or Smart have done a good job at motivating the Warriors to do it. The Warriors have seen how well they can play defense with their victory over the Celtics.
Since, that time the defense has regressed horribly from that game. There's barely any effort at all. The loose balls are never hustled for and allowing play after play to just get easy baskets is just flat out ridiculous especially when you're playing a team that has won three games and after tonight four.
I can understand the Warriors having difficulty against the Raptors with guarding two big men in Jermaine O'Neal and Chris Bosh, but O'Neal left early in the game with flu like symptoms and hurt his knee as well.
Another part of the defensive struggles has been players such as Brandan Wright, Andris Biedrins, and Ronny Turiaf biting on pumpfakes from centers that aren't really known for their range or if they do have the range you would much rather have them take that shot because it means you'll have an easier chance at the rebound it if is missed.
Another thing that really bugged me tonight about Smart is the fact that he put much shorter players on Kevin Durant. Meaning he had no problem taking them to the bucket and either attacking the rim or shooting the ball over them.
I do realize that Brandan Wright came into the game firing on all cylinders from the offensive side and made a good little play as well with the shotclock going down, but again Wright got into foul trouble.
So, instead of putting someone about the same height and actually more mobile than Wright they decide to attempt putting Jamal Crawford, Marco Belinelli, and Kelenna Azubuike on him. That didn't go so well either.
Hello Keith Smart you have a player on the bench who's 6'10" so just a little taller than Durant about as mobile as Durant and probably would have done a better job at staying in front of him than Wright was doing. His name is Anthony Randolph would it have hurt to use him to guard Durant.
It's amazing how many times the Warriors would double team a player in the corner be able to make one pass and find a wide open player for an easy layup because no one on the Warriors rotated. This is basic stuff that players are taught in high school and college, yet the Warriors don't ever seem to do it.
It's really a time for a change for the Warriors and it starts with Don Nelson and Keith Smart being fired. I don't care how young the Warriors are and I do understand mistakes happen, but to have it happen every game multiple times it's obvious that something isn't working.
Nelson will probably not be fired and neither will Smart, but since the change it doesn't seem like anything has been improved except for what can only be described as a mirage when the Warriors played the Celtics.
It's time for the Warriors to go in a different direction and that means a coach that's going to spend more time on defense.
