NBA All-Breakout Team for 2011-12

Matt JonesDec 21, 2011

At the end and start of every season, the revolving door of the NBA escorts the veterans out and the new rookies in.

Some rookies hit the ground running and are instant stars, but others take a little bit of time to develop.

This year is no different and there are a lot of young players who are ready to shine and have the season that lives up to the potential that helped them land a spot on their team in the first place.

There are a lot of players in the league who will improve their game and have a breakout season next year.

The following is a list of the 12 guys that will break out the most, broken down by two each per position and a sixth and 12th man.

Starting Point Guard, John Wall

1 of 12

John Wall of the Washington Wizards had a good rookie season last year and he will follow it up with an even better second year.

Last season Wall averaged 16.4 points and 8.3 assists per game.

He will see both of those totals rise this year as he will be more of a scoring threat and will have better help from teammates JaVale McGee, Nick Young and rookie Jan Vesely.

Starting Shooting Guard, DeMar DeRozan

2 of 12

DeMar DeRozan has the brightest future of any of the players on the Toronto Raptors and is poised to show the rest of the NBA why.

DeRozan has played a couple of years in the league and doubled his scoring average from year one to year two.

Last year he averaged 17.2 points per game and is ready to make this Raptor team his and lead them to more success this season.

Starting Small Forward, Paul George

3 of 12

Indiana Pacers swingman Paul George played like a rising star last season when he averaged 7.8 points and 3.7 rebounds per game.

During the offseason, the 21-year-old George grew two inches and now stands at 6'10" and has increased his overall length.

With the additional quality players that have joined the Pacers, George will have a better opportunity to improve on last seasons numbers and will have a breakout season.

Starting Power Forward, DeMarcus Cousins

4 of 12

Last season, DeMarcus Cousins cruised through his rookie year and was still able to put up 14.1 points and grab 8.6 rebounds per game.

This season a slimmer and more focused Cousins returns to the Sacramento Kings and will improve his numbers across the board.

Cousins has so much talent that when he puts some drive and determination behind it he will be a very good player.

Having outside shooters Tyreke Evans, Jimmer Fredette and Marcus Thornton to spread the floor and open things up for Cousins will help as well.

Starting Center, DeAndre Jordan

5 of 12

DeAndre Jordan was primed to be a breakout player before Chris Paul arrived in Los Angeles but now it is a guarantee.

Jordan has improved is scoring and rebounding numbers each of his three seasons in the league and last year averaged 7.1 points and 7.2 rebounds per game.

With opposing teams needing to pay attention to Paul and Blake Griffin, Jordan will be more able to raise his offensive game. It will help that one of the best point guards in the league will now be passing to him and will help make him better.

Sixth Man, Eric Gordon

6 of 12

Eric Gordon was a key piece in the recent Chris Paul trade and is the player that the New Orleans Hornets had to have in order to make it work.

Gordon has been a good scorer during his three seasons in the league. He averaged 22.3 points per game with the Clippers last season.

While he may not break out statistically this season and improve greatly on that already high scoring average, he is going to be the main player in New Orleans and will raise his game to an All-Star level.

Point Guard, Jrue Holiday

7 of 12

Jrue Holiday of the Philadelphia 76ers is a great young point guard who is going to have a great third season in the NBA.

Last year, Holiday started every game for the team and averaged 14 points and 6.5 assists per game.

As one of the main pieces of the 76ers and one of the better scorers on the team, Holiday will average a higher point total.

With Evan Turner and Andre Iguodala to pass to, his assist total will raise as well and he will have the breakout season that many are predicting.

Shooting Guard, James Harden

8 of 12

It is hard to believe that there is room on the Oklahoma City Thunder for another star player, but James Harden is going to join Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook as dominant players to create a big three of their own.

Harden played well in the playoffs last season and will improve on the 12.2 points per game he averaged last season.

Harden is going to not only break out, but he will explode with the Thunder this season, as he is ready to help make them one of the toughest teams to beat this year.

Small Forward, Danilo Gallinari

9 of 12

Danilo Gallinari may be a bit of a sleeper pick to be the second best small forward who will break out this season, but he is set up well for it in Denver.

Gallinari joined the team midseason last year and played well for the Nuggets. He averaged 14.7 points per game for the team and will have a better season this year, as he is not coming off of a trade and will feel more comfortable playing for the team.

It may also be to his benefit that three Nugget players who signed contracts to play in China during the lockout will not return until late in the season, as it will give him more time to play and develop.

Power Forward, Ed Davis

10 of 12

The Toronto Raptors and head coach Dwane Casey are planning to focus on defense this season, and Ed Davis will be a big part of that.

Last season, Davis did not play the full season with the Raptors but averaged 7.7 points, 7.1 rebounds and a blocked shot per game.

Davis, who has returned to the team in better shape, will be a big part of the Raptors front line and a nice compliment to rising star DeMar DeRozan.

The left-handed Davis will continue to improve in his second season and will bump his scoring and rebounding averages up to double figures.

Center, Roy Hibbert

11 of 12

Roy Hibbert of the Inidiana Pacers has shown steady improvement in each of his three years in the NBA.

This year he will continue to develop and will breakout with his best season yet.

The 25-year-old Hibbert will be a force in the paint for the Pacers who will need his defense to compliment the other players that they added to the team.

Hibbert will also benefit from the presence of newly-acquired free agent David West who will draw a lot of defensive attention which will free up space for Hibbert.

Last year he scored double figures with 12.7 points and had 1.8 blocked shots per game. Hibbert will add to these totals this season, as he has in the first three of his career.

12th Man, Wesley Matthews

12 of 12

Wesley Matthews is no stranger to breaking out—he has already done so on a smaller scale when he not only made the roster as and undrafted free agent in Utah and played his way to a starting role with the Portland Trail Blazers.

Matthews started nearly every game last season and averaged 15.9 points per contest.

He will continue his solid play offensively this season and will also improve his defensive efficiency. He will be the player that Portland needs to step up and help them to return to being a contender in the Western Conference.
