10 NFL Offensive Stars Who Will Not Make the Pro Bowl

Henry BrownDec 20, 2011

Every year some deserving NFL player is snubbed for the annual Pro Bowl game in Honolulu, Hawaii.

This season, there has been an offensive explosion throughout the league.

Six quarterback have thrown for over 4,000 yards. Four more will probably join them. Last season there were only five passers to reach the mark.

In rushing, 17 runners eclipsed 1,000-yards, but this season there will probably be 21 to surpass that number.

Here is a list of 10 NFL offensive stars that deserve Pro Bowl bids, but will not receive one.

10. Dez Bryant (Dallas Cowboys)

1 of 10

Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant has had a terrific season.

The second-year wideout has 51 catches for 796 yards and nine touchdowns receptions. His only downfall is not having a 100-yard receiving game. However, Bryant is tied for 10th in the NFL with 17 20-plus-yard receptions.

Bryant is worthy of a bid, but probably will not make the trip to Hawaii; except for an injury to one of the starters.

9. Tony Gonzalez (Atlanta Falcons)

2 of 10

The ageless wonder (35) is having a great season.

Gonzalez has posted a phenomenal 2011 season: 74 receptions, 826 yards and eight touchdown grabs. He has already surpassed his numbers of last year: 70 catches, 656 yards and six touchdowns.

The 11-time Pro Bowler deserves a 12th trip, but unless an injury to Jimmy Graham (New Orleans) or Jason Witten (Dallas), Gonzalez will not make it.

You could make a case for Witten's possible selection, but Witten will probably be the Cowboys' only offensive skill player to make the Pro Bowl.

8. Marshawn Lynch (Seattle Seahawks)

3 of 10

Because of runners like LeSean McCoy (Philadelphia), Frank Gore (San Francisco) and Atlanta's Michael Turner, several backs will miss the Hawaiin trip this season.

One of those running backs is Seattle's Marshawn Lynch.

Lynch has posted five 100-yard rushing games, and he has 11 rushing touchdowns (tied for 3rd).

With Seattle having a 7-7 record, Lynch is a product of playing for a bad team.

It is a shame because Lynch is a good back who deserves a trip to Hawaii.

7. Beanie Wells (Arizona Cardinals)

4 of 10

Arizona's Beanie Wells is another running back, who despite posting good numbers, will not make the Pro Bowl.

Wells has rushed for 994 yards and 10 touchdowns.

He has had only two 100-yard rushing games, but, one of them was over 200 yards. Wells rushed for 228 yards (season-high) on 27 carries against St. Louis.

Wells will probably make the Pro Bowl before his career is over, but he will have to wait another year.

6. Brandon Marshall (Miami Dolphins)

5 of 10

Brandon Marshall plays for a very bad Miami Dolphins team.

Marshall has had a good 2011 season: 70 catches for 1,021 yards and five touchdown receptions.

Not even Marshall's numbers could save former head coach Tony Sparano's job.

Despite a good showing this season by Marshall, other receivers in the AFC are more deserving.

5. Alex Smith (San Francisco 49ers)

6 of 10

I really feel for the Niners' Alex Smith.

For the first time in his career, Smith is playing great football.

The former first overall pick of 2005 has passed for 2,752 yards, 16 touchdowns and only five interceptions; he also has a completion percentage of over 61.

However, for all of the good Smith has done, he will not make the Pro Bowl.

His recent outing against the Pittsburgh Steelers (18-31 for 187 yards and one touchdown pass) did not help him.

But, you cannot help but sympathize for Smith.

He had been labeled a "bust," however, 2011 has been a major comeback for him.

With Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees and Eli Manning all but solidifying their spots in Hawaii, Smith, in any other year, would make it.

4. Jordy Nelson (Green Bay Packers)

7 of 10

While Greg Jennings gets all the ink for the Green Bay Packers' receiving corp, it is Jordy Nelson who is the most feared.

Nelson's 24-yard grab against the New York Giants (pictured above), kept the Packers unbeaten at the time. Green Bay went on to beat the Giants 38-35.

However, Nelson, could not save Green Bay's undefeated season on Sunday against Kansas City. Nelson had only two catches for 29 yards in the Packers 19-14 loss.

On the season, Nelson has 53 receptions for 986 yards and 10 touchdowns.

It is too bad Nelson will be a Pro Bowl snub, but the fourth-year receiver will have plenty of opportunities to make it to Hawaii before his career ends.

3. Matt Ryan (Atlanta Falcons)

8 of 10

Matt Ryan has had an outstanding season for the Falcons.

However, just like Alex Smith, Ryan will miss the Hawaii trip because of Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees and Eli Manning.

Ryan has passed for 3,698 yards, 26 touchdowns and only 12 interceptions.

With the Falcons still in playoff contention, Ryan's numbers will improve, but not enough to make the Pro Bowl.

2. Matthew Stafford (Detroit Lions)

9 of 10

If you think Ryan's omission is something, try Detroit's quarterback Matthew Stafford missing the Pro Bowl.

Stafford is finally healthy, and it has paid off.

The former top pick of 2009 has passed for over 4,000 yards (4,145 yards and counting), 33 touchdowns (fourth in the NFL) and only 14 picks. He has also passed for over 300 yards in a game six times.

Stafford has led a major revival in the "Motor City."

Detroit is 9-5 and chasing a wild-card spot.

The main reason behind the Lions success this season.

Look no further than Matthew Stafford.

1. Tony Romo (Dallas Cowboys)

10 of 10

It is a shame that Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo will have to sit out the Pro Bowl as well.

Romo is having probably his best season.

The signal-caller has taken a lot of criticism in the past for the Cowboys late-season failures, but 2011 has been different for Romo.

Romo has passed for 3,895 yards, 29 touchdowns, only nine interceptions and has five 300-yard plus games.

However, the Cowboys are 8-6 and have not wrapped up a playoff berth. Dallas is one game ahead of the New York Giants (7-7) in the NFC East. The Cowboys play a hot Philadelphia Eagles team—--who despite their inconsistency—also have a shot at winning the division.

Whether Dallas makes the playoffs, Romo will not make it to Hawaii either.

He deserves the bid, but Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees and division-rival foe Eli Manning are having greater seasons.
