Patriots vs. Broncos: Tim Tebow's Performance Wasn't the Reason New England Won

Tim DohertyDec 19, 2011

Last week was Tim Tebow week. On every sports media outlet the only topic that seemed relevant or important was Tim Tebow and nothing else. There was no dissection of his upcoming matchup against the 10-3 New England Patriots; there was just talk of what a Broncos victory would mean to Tebow's career—a player who going into the week had only started 11 games in the NFL.

Many believed Tebow would be able to dominate the Patriots' horrendous defense, and propel himself to superstardom. The one thing people forgot to talk about last week was how good an opponent they were facing.

The Patriots, along with the Saints and the Packers, have an offense that can score on any defense. They have so many playmakers and so many ways to beat the opposing defense that it is just too difficult to stop them for an entire game.

The Patriots offense was far too explosive for the Broncos to handle yesterday. Tom Brady and the Patriots offense slapped a 41-spot on a Denver defense that was revered as one of the league's best over the past eight weeks.

The Broncos offense came out of the gates flying. The Patriots defense seemed incapable of stopping Denver's run game. Early on the Broncos had all the momentum and it seemed like the game was going to come down to whichever team had the ball last.

However, the Patriots defense, who lost arguably their best player in Andre Carter, made major adjustments at halftime that paid huge dividends as the Broncos went from scoring 16 points in the first half to only seven in the second half.

Unfortunately, Tebow doesn't play defense. There was nothing he could do to stop Tom Brady, and if the Patriots star quarterback plays the way he played yesterday, quite frankly there is nothing anyone can do to stop the Patriots offense.

What we really should have been talking about last week was how the Broncos were going to stop the Patriots offense. The media as a whole needs to stop putting this guy—that's what I'm referring to him as because I'm tired of saying his name—on a pedestal. He's done a good job winning now seven out of nine games this season as the Broncos starting quarterback.

However, he hasn't been so impressive that he should be overshadowing the great season players like Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees and Brady are having.
