NBA Free Agents 2011: Predicting Where Each Top Remaining Player Will Sign

Matt JonesDec 19, 2011

There are still several NBA free agents on the market who can help out teams that need to add a player.

Despite the fact that preseason games are already being played, there is still time for these guys to sign with a team, pass their physicals and start the season with a contract.

The following are guys who have not yet signed with a team but are the top free agents left on the market.

They are each looking for work and could become the right fit for an NBA team.

Andrei Kirilenko

1 of 8

Throughout his career in Utah, it has been known that Andrei Kirilenko would have no problem returning to play basketball in his home country of Russia.

During the lockout, he signed with the Russian team he played with before his NBA career.

Many Jazz fans had hoped that Kirilenko would return to Utah, but with the signing of Josh Howard, the chance of a return is all but gone.

If Kirilenko does make a return to the NBA, the likely spot for him to land is in New Jersey, where he would play with his former teammate, Deron Williams.

For him to play in the league next season, Kirilenko may have to lower his asking price and play for the veteran's minimum. If he is not willing to do that, it looks like he will stay in Russia.

James Posey

2 of 8

James Posey was turned into a free agent by the Indiana Pacers, who chose to use the Amnesty Clause on him.

He has since cleared waivers and is a free agent.

The 35-year-old Posey does have some options, but he could very well return to the Boston Celtics. Posey won the NBA Championship with Boston in 2008.

Due to the unfortunate loss of Jeff Green this season, the Celtics could look to Posey to fill the spot Green has left.

Posey did experience a decline in his numbers last season but would be a help to the Celtics as a veteran defender and rebounder.

Kris Humphries

3 of 8

Kris Humphries had a very busy and overly publicized offseason.

Teams may be a bit hesitant to sign him to a contract with all of the distractions that it may cause for him in the upcoming season.

Last season was the best that Humphries has had in the league, averaging a double-double as one of the better rebounders in the NBA.

He has not yet drawn a lot of attention from teams and will most likely end up signing a short-term contract with the Nets. The team may not offer him much more so that they can stay in position to offer a big contract to Dwight Howard if he is a free agent next summer.

If he does sign with the Nets and the team can pull off the trade for Howard that they so desperately want, Humphries may once again be traded as he has been several times in his career.

Arron Afflalo

4 of 8

Aaron Afflalo is a restricted free agent in Denver, and it would be a bad move for the Nuggets to not sign him to a contract.

With several of the Nuggets stuck in China for most of this season, Afflalo is an important part of the direction the team is going.

He and the Nuggets will need to do some serious negotiations over the next week, but it is likely that the two sides will get the job done and Afflalo will be a Nugget this season.

Samuel Dalembert

5 of 8

The Houston Rockets are a very young team who needs an experienced center.

The best center still available on the free agent market is Samuel Dalembert, who most recently played with the Sacramento Kings.

Dalembert and the Rockets have been in negotiations for the last week or so, but they need to reach terms soon and get him on the team.

There is a good chance that the two sides will find a way to add him to the team in the next several days.

DeShawn Stevenson

6 of 8

The Dallas Mavericks liked DeShawn Stevenson, but he is worth more than they can offer him. With the signing of Delonte West, Stevenson is looking for another team.

The Indiana Pacers would be a good fit for Stevenson, who is known as a solid defender who can be a good role player and a veteran presence on a relatively young Pacer squad.

Stevenson would be a good defensive player to come off the bench and showed in Dallas that he is willing to play whatever role is needed to help the team.

Nick Young

7 of 8

With a 17.4 point per game average last season for the Washington Wizards, one might think that Nick Young would have been a more sought-after free agent.

The Wizards offered Young a $3.7 million qualifying offer and want to have him for the long term.

Young, who is a restricted free agent, is hoping for more money than the qualifying offer and will need to drop the amount that he is asking to make re-signing with the team a reality.

Despite a good season last year, Young is apparently not worth as much as he is asking.

Another team may offer more than the Wizards, but it is likely that Washington will find a way to bring him back.

Gilbert Arenas

8 of 8

Gilbert Arenas was not a free agent until the Orlando Magic used the amnesty clause to release him.

Having cleared waivers, Arenas looks for a home but wants to play for either a current contender or whichever team Dwight Howard ends up on.

The big question marks surrounding Arenas are the strength of his knee and whether or not he has much basketball left in him to offer.

It is likely that he would sign a short term contract until that can be determined, and most teams will not take a chance on him.

One possibility is Arenas landing with the Miami Heat, who do not really need a scorer but could benefit from a good role player if he turns out to still be able to play.

Adding him to the Heat is not a big risk, and they showed that they are willing to take chances on veteran players when they added Eddy Curry.
