NBA Rumors: New York Knicks Must Sign Baron Davis
The New York Knicks have not had the best offseason. They have missed out on two key free agents in Jamal Crawford and Shawne Williams, which would have solved a huge hole at point guard. However, they cannot miss out on the chance at signing Baron Davis, if he clears amnesty waivers.
According to Moke Hamilton’s column at Sheridan Hoops, he suggests that the Knicks should take a risk on Davis because of their lack of playmakers.
"We don’t have any playmakers on this team, so we’re going to have to depend on Carmelo to do it!
Why else do you think the Knicks brass will be sitting on pins and needles until about 6pm ET on Friday?
They hope Baron Davis clears amnesty waivers.
At this point, the Knicks so desperately need help with playmaking, they’re hoping a player with a reputation for being out of shape and not putting forth the effort necessary to win can be their missing ingredient. It’s a low risk gamble, so I say why not? And yes, I say that despite the prognosis that he will be out for eight to 10 weeks as he battles a severely bulging disc in his lower back.
"
Hamilton makes a great point in that this Knicks team has Anthony as the only playmaker on this team.
If they can get Davis into New York and get him motivated, they will get one of the better point guards in the NBA. A motivated Davis would turn this Knicks team from a middle-of-the-pack team in the Eastern Conference, to a team that can make a deep run in the playoffs.
Davis’ back is a cause for concern. However, Davis’ agent, Todd Ramasar, told the New York Post:
"“It is a serious issue, his health is the main priority to get back to the court.”
"
The Knicks should sign Davis if he can clear amnesty waivers and let the point guard have back surgery. This Knicks team can stay in playoff contention while Davis heals up from the surgery.
Then Davis can come back in the middle to late part of February and give this Knicks team a shot in the arm into the playoffs.
Without Davis, this Knicks team will be a playoff team that is bounced out of the playoffs in the first round.
With Davis, they are a legit threat to the top teams of the Eastern Conference. It’s a move that they have to make, and that will make up for their earlier failures.
