Former NBA Officer Alleges Sexual Abuse Claims Ignored
Former NBA security officer Warren Glover is suing the league for lost wages and damages due to his belief that he was fired for reporting concerns about women being sexually harassed by other league officials, according to a report in the New York Times.
The report says that Glover repeatedly informed his superiors about instances of harassment against women but that they were ignored, and he was held down because of his willingness to speak out despite nearly universal praise about his job performance.
"This past June, on the occasion of his 10th anniversary with the league, Glover received a congratulatory letter from Commissioner David Stern, along with a gold watch. A month later, according to the lawsuit, Cawley called Glover into a conference room and informed him “that he was being terminated as a result of his poor performance.”
"
These are dark times in sports right now. You have all the allegations going on at Penn State, Syracuse and now this with the NBA.
Maybe there is more to this story than meets the eye, but the report cites a number of instances in which Glover tries to alert his superiors about a number of problems that he saw and their refusal to act on what he was telling them.
"In 2004, a female employee named Selman Allsop complained that she had been subjected to “offensive verbal remarks” from another security director, John Daniels, “after she had rebuffed his unwelcome advance,” according to the lawsuit. When Glover relayed those complaints, Tolbert dismissed them as false and accused Allsop of trying to damage Daniels’s career.
"
While the legal process has to be seen through in this case, the fact that Glover was given a glowing letter of appreciation from David Stern shortly before he was fired does raise some red flags.
Maybe there is some logical explanation from the people that Glover mentions in the suit, and they will tell their story in court. But right now things don't look good for them or the NBA right now.
