NBA Trade Rumors: O.J. Mayo Won't Stay in Memphis All Season
O.J. Mayo isn't leaving Memphis just yet, but his stay isn't permanent either.
The fourth-year man out of USC was nearly traded for Josh McRoberts of the Pacers before the deal finally collapsed this morning. According to Commercial Appeal (@CAGrizBlog), Mayo also said the team told him he wasn't going anywhere:
Mayo has been at the center of trade rumors since last year's infamous in-flight fight with Tony Allen.
But the Grizzlies have yet to pull the trigger and the potential-laden 2-guard is going to begin the 2011 season with the club. However, there are some interesting possibilities come trade-deadline time.
And remember, the season begins on Christmas and the trade deadline won't be very far away.
Mayo's numbers took a hit last season when he averaged 12 minutes and six points fewer per game than his career averages.
There is no shortage of interest in the talented youngster; the Pacers certainly aren't going away and there is only one year left on his rookie deal.
Memphis is bringing back Marc Gasol with a big deal and the team is already heavily invested in Zach Randolph, Rudy Gay and Mike Conley Jr.
To believe the Grizzlies would close off entirely from sending out Mayo is foolish come the trade deadline or even sooner.
Look for the club to keep their ears open to the Mayo market and don't be surprised at all if it is the Pacers who come calling again. If the Jamal Crawford situation doesn't include Indiana, we could very well hear about Mayo heading to the Pacers again very soon.
