Dwight Howard Trade Rumors: Smart Superstar Limits Teams He Will Re-Sign With

Alex KayDec 13, 2011

Dwight Howard isn’t going to sign a long-term contract with just any NBA team.

In fact, there are only four clubs he would even consider staying with past this season.

According to Chris Broussard of ESPN, a source close to the situation has leaked that Howard would only be willing to stick around with the Orlando Magic, New Jersey Nets, Dallas Mavericks and Los Angeles Lakers.

Good for Dwight; he’s actually making a smart move by doing this and it will help him get traded to a good team or force the Magic to put better players around him.

With the exception of Orlando, each one of the squads he wants to join has pieces to be competitive for years to come and owners who are willing to pay big bucks to field a championship contender.

The reigning three-time Defensive Player of the Year is one of the best players in the league right now and deserves to have a chance to compete for a title every single year.

Especially after serving seven loyal years with the Magic and only reaching the finals once.

Now that the Miami Heat, New York Knicks, Chicago Bulls and Boston Celtics have made the East much more competitive than it used to be, there is no way that Howard would get back there with the current roster.

He knows it and everyone in the NBA knows it, which is why teams are trying to entice him to leave and become a part of a winner.

Of course, those teams he wants to join do not possess the best trade pieces and GM Otis Smith would be able to get a lot more for him from a non-contender, but Dwight doesn’t want to be a part of another rebuilding effort during his prime.

Dwight said:

"

"I love this city, there is no place I'd rather be but Orlando," Howard said. "I just want to make sure we have the right things here so we can win a championship. I'm all about change. If you're willing to change and you're willing to do what it takes to win then, you know, you got me."

"

Things are certainly going to have to change in Orlando soon, otherwise they will be moving on without their superstar center very shortly, as he becomes a free agent and will walk for nothing at the end of the season.
