NFL Playoff Picture: Coaches Who Need Postseason Success to Save Jobs

Wes ODonnellDec 12, 2011

The NFL firing squad hasn't lined up yet (Jack Del Rio of the Jaguars was a long time coming) but there should be some big changes on the sidelines this offseason.

With as many as 16 teams still technically in contention for the postseason, we can expect the unexpected.

Heck, the unexpected has been happening all season. To avoid that, coaches will have to step up their game around the league.

Here are some coaches who need postseason success to save their jobs.

Norv Turner, Chargers

San Diego is all but eliminated from the postseason at this point. They currently trail the Denver Broncos by two games with three remaining on the schedule.

But, we have seen crazier things.

Norv Turner won't survive if he just makes the postseason this year, though. Too many times under his rule have the Chargers underperformed, and it will take a miracle postseason run for him to return next season.

Tom Coughlin, Giants

For too long has the Giants organization stood by the notion that they owe Coughlin something because of their magical Super Bowl run in 2007.

If not for Eli Manning's stellar play this season, Coughlin's Giants would be floundering like the Philadelphia Eagles are under the weight of Andy Reid.

But enough is enough with the late-season collapses, and somebody has to be held accountable for the countless blown coverages and questionable play-calling in the red zone.

That all goes away with a postseason run.

Jason Garrett, Cowboys

It is tough to believe owner Jerry Jones would fire Garrett, but if the Cowboys fail to find any postseason success, or the postseason itself for that matter, Jones needs to examine his team.

Tony Romo's inability to win big games late in the year has gone unchecked for too long, and Dallas has won only one playoff game since 1996.

Garrett's mismanagement a week ago and potential sweep at the hands of the Giants could cost him the playoffs.

That is unacceptable in Dallas.
