College Basketball: Every Top 25 Team's Season Prognosis Compared to a Movie
College basketball is in full swing as the contenders try to separate themselves from the pretenders.
With so many great match-ups in the rear-view mirror, now’s a great time to evaluate what we know so far about this season’s ranked teams. With the holiday movie deluge upon us, let’s use movies as the theme for what’s going on with the top 25.
25: Texas A&M
1 of 25Paranormal Activity 3
It’s a decent franchise, got a lot of hype, but the most recent installation was a bit of a disappointment. That being said, it still performed well in the box office. All in all, a lot of hype, little substance, just like Texas A&M.
24: Harvard
2 of 25Dead Poets Society
Lots of kids who you can’t identify with, but there’s something special about them and you can’t help but root for them even though they’re already on top of the social ladder.
Isn’t it enough that they go to Harvard? Do they have to be good at basketball, too?
23: Gonzaga
3 of 25Great Expectations
The talent’s been there for years. This time around Gonzaga may not be a good as the Bulldog teams of the past. Only time will tell how this perennial heart breaker will turn out.
22: Illinois
4 of 25The Muppets
They’ve been good for a while. But in the past few years, you forgot how good they really were.
They’re back to show that they’re not going anywhere.
21: Georgetown
5 of 25In the Name of the Father/There will be Blood
Make no mistake, Georgetown is good. They have a little of the edge created by John Thomson(‘80s version) and JT3’s poised to get out of his father’s shadow one of these years. This may be the beginning.
20: Memphis
6 of 25Goldmember
This movie had its charm, but it just wasn’t that funny overall. There were some great parts, but the movie lost you here and there along the way. But, it’s still an Austin Powers movie, so it has that.
Sound like an inconsistent team anyone knows?
19: Michigan
7 of 25Death of a Salesman
We’ve seen the story, heck we love the story, but in the end, we all know how it’s going to turn out. It’s just not meant to be.
18: Mississippi State
8 of 25Lost Highway
This is a great movie but it’s hard to figure out. In fact, I don’t know anyone who has ever figured it out. I know it’s good, but something just doesn’t sit well.
17: Creighton
9 of 25The Outsiders
It’s a story that makes you root for the dog. You don’t know how they’re going to do it, but they just have to. For Pony Boy and the Jays.
16: Wisconsin
10 of 25Judgment Night
This is a good bunch of guys caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. While it may seem like the odds are stacked up against them, these guys find a way to make it out alright.
15: Alabama
11 of 25Forrest Gump
I don’t have a real reason for picking Gump except that every time I hear someone say, “Alabama” I think of this scene.
14: Pitt
12 of 25The Boondock Saints
These guys are tough, they’re innovative and they can do a lot of damage. They’re also fun to root for.
13: Kansas
13 of 25The Pursuit of Happyness
Life’s going to throw some curveballs at you. How you deal with it is the measure of a man and a team. This is not a Kansas team that should be dismissed.
12: Florida
14 of 25The Wizard of Oz
If I only had a brain
If I only had a heart
If I only had a team that learned from Villanova’s mistakes and didn’t run a four guard set.
The pieces look like they’re there, but there’s definitely something missing.
11: Marquette
15 of 25Saving Private Ryan
Starts out ferociously out of the gate, but that kind of pace can’t last. Men start dropping off as the story progresses till someone is curled up crying in the end.
10: Missouri
16 of 25Happy Gilmore
Out of the box, teams are getting blown out. Who knew this kind of talent was on the Tigers’ roster? Through some refinement and hard work, we may have a pretty darn good team on our hands.
9: Connecticut
17 of 25It’s a Wonderful Life
Defending Champion, life is good and you wonder what life without Kemba Walker would be like.
Answer: It’s nice to be a Husky
8: Xavier
18 of 25The Goonies
Just like the kids from the “Goondocks”, these kids are better than advertised.
Remember Mikey’s four words, “Goonies never say die.”
7: Baylor
19 of 25Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?
Building off last year’s success, the Baylor Bears are not going away. They seem to fit right in making other teams uncomfortable.
6: North Carolina
20 of 25Bridesmaids
They’re good enough to do it all, and losing to Kentucky is nothing to be ashamed of, but that UNLV blowout has me perplexed. How will UNC survive in crunch time down the road? I have the feeling there won’t be bells ringing for Carolina this year.
5: Duke
21 of 25A Few Good Men
They lost some stars, but Duke still has the chops to take the whole thing.
Who am I kidding; Duke always has a team that can win it all.
It’s just not fair!
4: Louisville
22 of 25Million Dollar Baby
The talent is there, but how much punishment and injury can be sustained. It’s valiant, but I just don’t think it can be kept up. The plug may be pulled sooner than later.
3: Syracuse
23 of 25Fist of the North Star
They’ve been down, even struggled, but they have shown a knack for keeping calm and striking when the opportunity presents itself. This is a dangerous and deep team.
2: Ohio State
24 of 25Almost Famous
They’re close. They’re very, very close. But will they take the opportunity when it's there or simply fade away?
1: Kentucky
25 of 25Top Gun
This is a highly talented machine that can take on all comers as long as they remember to never leave their wingmen.
