Utah Jazz: What Tyrone Corbin Must Teach Each Jazz Player in NBA Training Camp

Matt JonesDec 15, 2011

Like the rest of the teams in the NBA, the  Utah Jazz are in the middle of the shortened training camp that will precede the upcoming 66-game season.

Despite not yet making any big trades or free-agent signings, the Jazz remain a team that is difficult to predict due to the mix of young talent, returning veterans and emerging stars.

Head coach Tyrone Corbin and his staff are faced with the challenge of teaching the players on this team a variety of different things that will lead to future success.

The following is a list of things that Corbin should focus on for each player. The players listed are those who are currently signed and in camp with the team.

The Jazz roster now stands at 17 players and at least two will need to be released to meet NBA roster limits.

The Rookies

1 of 5

Alec Burks is going to be a good player in the NBA and a great addition to the Jazz.

The thing he must learn early is to relax and let the game and his development come slowly. Trying to do too much too fast will only hurt him. He does have a lot to prove, but must be taught to go slowly and let his talent show within the offense.

Enes Kanter was a bit of a risky draft pick due to not having played much basketball over the last couple of years. He, like Burks, has a lot to prove but will most likely take a bit longer to develop.

Kanter will need patience as he battles for playing time in the crowded Jazz frontcourt. He will do well to learn that he has a long career ahead of him and he does not have to be the superstar immediately.

Paul Carter was recently signed to join the team in training camp but does not have a great chance at cracking the season roster.

Carter is an athletic 68" forward who the Jazz worked out with Jimmer Fredette and Kemba Walker before the draft. Coach Corbin must teach him to play loose and not try to overplay to make the team..

Scottie Reynolds played last season in the Developmental League but has not yet played in the NBA. He is a point guard who starts training camp a bit late due to playing recently in the Philippines.

With three veteran point guards on the roster it is a long shot for Reynolds to make the cut. Corbin and his staff must instill confidence in this young player that he can further his career with the Jazz, or with another team.

The Sophomores

With the exception of recently signed Trey Gilder, each of the team's second-year players began to show their talent and potential at the end of last season.

Derrick Favors is a main piece of the Jazz future and will benefit from staying with one team for an entire season.

He is going to get an increase in playing time and must learn ways to stay on the court and out of foul trouble. He will need to be taught better defensive positioning against opposing players so he can reach his potential on both ends of the court.

Gordon Hayward is another player that the Jazz are building this team around. He showed that he can be a great player in the league during his last several games last season.

Hayward needs to be taught how to gain confidence and a little bit of swagger. This season he can no longer be the wide-eyed rookie and has a lot of expectation. He has the talent both offensively and defensively. If he learns to play with a little bit of fire and confidence, he will be great.

Jeremy Evans is one of the most athletic players on the team, but he needs to be taught how to use his athleticism on the court. This year he is going to have to learn to do more than finish the alley-oop or sky in for rebounds. His future in the league depends largely on the coaching he receives and how far he develops this season.

Trey Gilder played a couple of games with the Memphis Grizzlies in 2009. He is a tall, athletic forward who plays similarly to Jeremy Evans. It would be great for him to play his way to a roster spot but it is not likely. Like Paul Carter, he must play well in training camp but learn not to try and do too much in hopes of making the team.

Millsap and Jefferson

3 of 5

As arguably the two best players on the team, Paul Millsap and Al Jefferson both need to work on defense. They were not good last year defensively and will both be working together to improve individual and team defense.

There are a couple of other things they must learn that may not be related to on-court skills.

It is likely that Paul Millsap will be asked to be more of a role player than he may want to be. He will also endure trade rumors all season long and will have to have help from his coaches to play well with some unneeded distractions.

Al Jefferson will also hear some trade speculation this season and will need to ignore it. After the midseason trade last year, Jefferson became the player that took the team on his back and led through the end of the season. Coach Corbin must help Jefferson become the team leader and main player that others depend on. If Jefferson can turn this into his team, the Jazz will have a successful year.

The Old Guards

4 of 5

Three of the five Jazz point guards in camp are veteran players. This is a position that the team is counting on to help out the young players and lead the team.

Devin Harris did not get enough time last season to make a fair assessment and dealt with comparisons to Deron Williams. During camp this year, Corbin and his coaching staff need to help Harris better learn the offense and how to be a leader again.

After being stuck in New Jersey for several seasons, Harris needs to be reminded of the player he has been in the past and return to that level.

The Jazz made a good move to re-sign Earl Watson, who spent last season with the team. He was a calming force for the young guys and led the second team during much of the season.

Coach Corbin has a strong veteran player in Watson who will be especially valuable in the locker room and on road trips. Corbin would do well to make sure that Watson knows the team philosophy well so he can be a great mentor for the younger players.

Raja Bell endured a tough season last year that was a bit disappointing to Jazz fans. Corbin and his staff must work to help Bell regain the form that they thought they were getting at the beginning of last year. Bell has some good basketball left to play, and needs to find the confidence to be a bigger contributor.

Jamal Tinsley has experienced a pretty good career in the NBA but also needs to find the confidence to regain the level of play he once had. The Jazz giving him the opportunity to get back into the league will help, but he is going to need to be taught how to be patient in making a comeback.

C.J., Memo and McLeod

5 of 5

If C.J. Miles and Mehmet Okur play well this season, the Utah Jazz will be successful.

Both players are in the last year of their contracts, and both have the opportunity to have a great season.

Throughout his career, C.J. Miles has been a very inconsistent player. Some nights he does nothing and other nights he looks like an All-Star.

The coaching staff have got to find a way for Miles to be more consistent. One thing that may help is for Miles to learn better shot selection instead of tossing up long-range shots early in the shot clock.

Mehmet Okur has a big contract and a chance to make a big comeback. Like several of his teammates, Okur needs confidence.

That will come from more playing time and success. It will not take long for fans to get behind Okur if he can find the ability that helped him be "money." If Corbin can successfully manage adding Okur back into the lineup, the Jazz are going to exceed expectations. The coaches must also help Memo to regain the confidence that his body will hold up, and forget about past injuries.

Keith McLeod is getting another shot with the team and must be reminded of the hard work that landed him a roster spot in the past. With the other guards that the team has signed, McLeod making the team is also a long shot, but perhaps the coaching staff can teach him a thing or two that will help him stay in the NBA.
