Eagles vs. Seahawks: Why Philadelphia's Season Is Already over

Ryan PhillipsDec 1, 2011

The Philadelphia Eagles were supposed to be headed for the Super Bowl this season. After adding several big-name free agents like Nnamdi Asomugha, Jason Babin and Cullen Jenkins, the Eagles were assumed to be the favorites in the NFC East and a team that had a deep postseason run in it.

Obviously, all of those assumptions were wrong.

The Eagles are currently 4-7 and have easily been the NFL's biggest disappointment this season. The franchise inked Michael Vick to a six-year, $100 million contract during the preseason and he has spent almost the entire season either injured or recovering from injuries. Tonight against the Seahawks he will be sidelined for the third game in a row thanks to two fractured ribs he suffered against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 10.

With Vince Young at quarterback and starting wideout Jeremy Maclin also sidelined, I have very little confidence the Eagles can generate much offense. Running back LeSean McCoy has been outstanding this season, but one man can't win games for a team.

The Eagles are far on the outside of the NFC playoff picture, and if Vick can't make it back by next week they might as well shelve him for the season. Why continue to run him out there if he's not 100 percent? By doing so they risk an even more severe injury to their $100 million investment.

Most experts think head coach Andy Reid will be gone after this season and it's hard to disagree with that assessment. Given what was expected from the Eagles and where they currently are, I wouldn't be surprised if Reid is without a job in January.

As of now the Eagles could continue to sink even further. I don't know if they'll lose tonight since we never know what we're going to get from them, but with nothing to play for and a lot of big egos on the roster, the 2011 season is all but over for Philadelphia.
