Cotto vs. Margarito 2: 10 Reasons Cotto Will Win Saturday in NYC
In the past few months, controversy has been the only subject in boxing.
It started with Floyd Mayweather, Jr. knocking out Victor Ortiz in a strange way. The punch was legal, but some say it was a cheap one.
A few weeks later, Chad Dawson defeated Bernard Hopkins in Round 2 in a wrestling kind of fight. The WBC overturned the decision and Hopkins kept his title.
Finally, we had Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez. The fight was so controversial that it could lead to some investigations.
The Cotto vs. Margarito fight should not cause any controversy.
There are 10 good reasons why Cotto will defeat Margarito.
10. Antonio Margarito’s Surgically Repaired Right Eye
1 of 10Miguel Cotto will target Margarito’s right eye early on and he will keep targeting it throughout the entire fight. Yes, New York gave a license to Margarito, but they will be more careful than ever.
As soon there is some swelling, blood or any sign of injury, they won’t hesitate to stop that fight. Miguel Cotto will use it to his own advantage.
9. Miguel Cotto Learned from the First Fight
2 of 10Miguel Cotto and Margarito are fighting for the second time. Usually, the better and more talented boxer always gets the edge in the second fight.
Definitely, Cotto is the better technician and has more abilities than Margarito. He learned from the first fight and consequently will adjust for the second fight.
8. Antonio Margarito Won’t Have the Edge with His Gloves
3 of 10In the last fight, it seemed like Margarito had magical gloves. Cotto had the edge at midpoint until he got hit with hard shots.
This time, I doubt that Margarito will have any loaded hand wraps. If Margarito can’t hurt Cotto, can he really compete with him?
7. Margarito Doesn't Have Much Left in the Tank
4 of 10Clearly, Margarito isn’t the same fighter he was for the first fight back in 2008.
After this war vs. Cotto, Margarito followed with a loss against Shane Mosley. A year ago, he took a beating vs. Manny Pacquiao. Since then, Margarito hasn’t been in the ring.
Actually, he only won one fight in the past three years. The Mexican fighter had to deal with his right eye problems and with the scandal of his loaded hand wraps vs. Shane Mosley.
Definitely, Margarito isn’t the same man than he was a few years back. A brawler always declines faster than a technician.
6. Manny Pacquiao Will Haunt Margarito
5 of 10The last time he was in the ring, Margarito got destroyed by Manny Pacquiao. Since then, he couldn’t get back in the ring for some confidence.
On the other end, since his loss vs. the Filipino icon, Cotto has won two decisive fights vs. undefeated Yuri Foreman and brawler Ricardo Mayorga.
Cotto is past the Pacquiao fight. Margarito could still be haunted by this loss.
5. Cotto Believes in Loaded Hand Wraps
6 of 10Cotto really believes that Margarito used loaded hand wraps in their 2008 fight, so he still thinks that he lost in an unfair way back then.
This will give confidence to Cotto; he won’t have the same doubts as other fighters who could have lost the first fight. His doubts won’t exist since to him, Margarito cheated.
4. Las Vegas Thinks That Cotto Will Win
7 of 10Las Vegas isn’t always right, but more favourites win than lose and that is undeniable.
Currently, Miguel Angel Cotto is set as a -220 favorite, which means you need to bet 200 dollars to win 100 dollars.
In reverse, Antonio Margarito is registered as a +180 underdog, which means that betting 100 dollars on him could win you 180 dollars.
3. Miguel Cotto Will Control the Tempo
8 of 10Miguel Cotto is more talented and it’s tough to go against this statement. Cotto will try to keep the fight in the middle of the ring and control the tempo of this fight.
Margarito will be out of his element and struggle to keep on with a more talented boxer like Cotto.
2. Judges Will Favor Cotto
9 of 10Boxing judges are always fair. How good is that joke? If you saw Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez, you know that this assumption is false.
The boxing world wants the good guy to win this fight. Overall, it would be better for boxing.
Margarito is practically done and Cotto can still sell tickets for upcoming big fights. Arum even admitted that Cotto is the boxer who sells the most in New York.
He is also not at risk for injury like his opponent.
Definitely, the judges will favour Miguel Angel Cotto in this one. I can’t see how Margarito wins it if it goes the distance.
1. There's No Reason for Margarito To Win
10 of 10No one thinks that Margarito can win by decision over Cotto. Therefore, the only edge that people give to Margarito is his power. Everyone keeps referring to the first fight, but do people remember the hand wraps?
Manny Pacquiao sent Juan Manuel Marquez down four times in the first two fights. However, he couldn't send him down once in the final chapter of their rivalry.
The power edge of Margarito is minimal compared to everything else going against Margarito. He is fading fight after fight, he has an injured right eye, he is less talented and judges won't give him any close rounds.
Finally, do not forget that Cotto also has respectable power.
If Margarito loses this fight, I could definitely see him retiring. Actually, I believe that it's the last time that we will ever see Margarito in the ring.
