NBA Free Agents 2011: Players Teams Need to Be Wary of Before Signing

Matt ShetlerNov 29, 2011

While some free agents are obviously good signings for any team that pursues them, that's not always the case.

Much of the time, teams need to be very wary of how deep they tread into free agency. Many of these potential signings can come with much more risk than reward.

Here are five guys that teams should be very wary of signing.

Mike Bibby: Bibby is 33 years old now, but his game looks much older than that. He can't score like he used to, and he has lost a step defensively. He's a veteran, but a very inconsistent one.

Tracy McGrady: Once one of the best players in the NBA, health problems derailed his career to the point that he averaged only eight points per game a year ago in Detroit. Teams must tread very carefully when pursuing McGrady.

Greg Oden: Health issues combined with a big salary equals a ton of risk. He could end up back in Portland. Whether it's the Blazers or any other team, they are really rolling the dice on this guy.

Caron Butler: I'm a fan of Butler's, but I'd be very wary of throwing decent money at him. He's 31 years old and coming of a knee injury. In his case, the nagging injuries are piling up year to year, so can he be counted on to play 75-plus games. As much as i like Butler, there is a lot of risk involved with signing him.

Kris Humphries: Does anyone else think that this guy isn't that good and is going to get a whole bunch of money? He's the classic case of a guy having his best season in a contract year. Look a little more closely at his 2010 stat line that produced a double-double—he actually produced career worst numbers per 36 minutes.

Whoever throws this guy big money is more than likely getting the guy that's averaged 5.6 points per game and 4.7 rebounds per game over his career instead of the guy that averaged 10.0 and 10.4 in 2010
