NBA Free Agent Rumors: Jamal Crawford and Players Guaranteed to Disappoint
Many teams will be looking to the free agency market to solve their problems. Some will think they found their answers and be disappointed. Here are the free agents who are going to generate a lot of buzz for now, but once the season starts, will be stuck with the "disappointing" qualifier.
Jamal Crawford is a streaky shooter who found a niche with the Atlanta Hawks. Historically, he's been a player who provides scoring but not much else. Last year, he gave the Hawks just 14.2 points per game. There are some teams, like the Chicago Bulls, who are in need of a shooting guard.
Crawford is not the answer. He shoots, but he doesn't guard. He doesn't dribble. He doesn't pass. He doesn't play defense. And honestly, he doesn't score like he once did either. Crawford will be a disappointment wherever he goes.
Glenn Davis is a good defender and a good spot-up shooter. I'll give you that. He'll do fine as long as he's a backup big somewhere. However, there's always someone trying to make a reach and make a starter out of a guy who isn't one. Davis isn't one. He simply doesn't rebound well enough to start.
His total rebound percentage is just 11.4, which is just not good enough for a starting big. He was 163rd in the NBA among players with at least four boards a game, and trailed the likes of Landry Fields. That's not good.
Shane Battier has built a reputation as a "glue guy" who brings good defense every game, every year. He's not an outstanding offensive player by any stretch, but he's always been a good defensive player. However, he's not as good as he once was on defense.
After getting traded to Memphis, Battier only averaged a 15.8 efficiency recap per 48 minutes, only good for 65th in the NBA among small forwards. He was also bested by his counterpart 37 times, compared to just 24 times where he had the edge. Battier's best years are behind him, and if you're looking for a stopper, he's not it any more.
Josh Howard was in an All-Star game, but hasn't had much of a chance to play since he got traded to Washington. There is some GM somewhere who has convinced himself that he just hasn't had a chance there. 'It's the injury, and who cares about a little pot?' they'll be thinking. Then they're going to go out and sign Howard.
That's going to be a big mistake. Howard's production has been on the decline, and the thing you want to hear about a guy that's ready to turn over a new leaf, I can't find news on. Namely, working hard in the offseason to get better.
Howard will disappoint someone, somewhere. Just hope it isn't your team.
