NBA Trade Rumors: Why Dwight Howard and the Chicago Bulls Are a Perfect Fit

Richard LangfordNov 26, 2011

Dwight Howard's addition to the Chicago Bulls would lead to another dynasty in the Windy City.

Howard is going to be one of the prized free agents of next year's class, unless the elite big man is involved in a sign-and-trade deal prior to that.

Either way, the Bulls will inevitably be involved in the discussion. The rest of the league should hope he goes somewhere else.

Dynamic Duo

Howard would team up with reigning MVP to form one of the NBA's all-time great center-guard combos. The two would compliment each other perfectly on the offensive end.

Rose is one of the game's best at penetrating into the lane. The presence of Howard would either keep the oppositions' big men from sliding over to help on Rose, or it would leave the game's best finisher open to do what he does best: dunk the ball.

Defensive Improvement

Howard would be an upgrade on the defensive end for a team that was already elite. The Bulls finished last season No. 2 in scoring offense.

Howard is one of the game's best defensive players. He would help the Bulls own the key, and free up defenders to guard tighter on the perimeter.

Offensive Improvement

The Bulls hoped Carlos Boozer would bring them a consistent low-post scorer. That didn't work out. Boozer was injury prone and inconsistent.

Howard would give the Bulls the inconsistent post presence they have been looking for. Howard has a limited low-post game, but he is very effective when he gets the ball close to the hoop.

With Rose's penetration, Howard would have an opportunity to catch numerous passes close to the rim and finish with authority.

Lineup Flexibility

The addition of Howard would give the Bulls all kinds of flexibility. It would allow them to trade Boozer or Noah for the shooting guard they need, or it would give them an elite three-man rotation down low.

Boozer and Noah could split minutes at the power spot. This would allow Noah to wear out opposing power forwards on the defensive end, and then let Boozer go to work on them on the offensive end.

Probability

The Bulls will make a hard run at Howard. He is an excellent fit for their defensive-minded system. He would give them a pairing with Rose that would solidify this organization for the next decade.

They also offer Howard the lure of a huge market, and playing for a contender.

The Bulls are going to have plenty of competition for Howard, but they should be considered one of the front runners.
