NBA Lockout: Why 66-Game Season Is Dream Scenario for League, Fans

Patrick ClarkeNov 26, 2011

The 66-game season the NBA is planning on tipping off on Christmas Day is the best possible scenario for the league and its hoops-thirsty fans.

NBA players and owners reached a tentative deal early Saturday morning, and regardless of the specifics, we will have basketball in the coming weeks.

Sure, it's not a full 82-game slate of ball games for each squad, but who's to say that a 66-game schedule isn't more exciting.

A shortened season means a much more competitive and intriguing playoff race this spring, and healthier superstars as well.

Let's be real, the NBA doesn't come back into the professional sports picture until Christmas Day anyway, when fans sense the NFL is wrapping up.

As much as we hated the lockout and hate that we have missed games, we haven't missed anything important yet, not by a long stretch.

There is still plenty of time for the league to give us some thrilling matchups, but this time around they'll mean even more.

As someone who has always bashed the MLB for playing 162 regular season games, the NBA's 82 is teetering on overkill.

Bad teams have no shot after the season's first two months and waste away at the bottom of the standings.

Similar to baseball, they have little to play for and the competition and excitement level suffers late in the regular season.

As a Phoenix Suns supporter this 66-game proposal has me jumping for joy. We can win baby!

A team like Phoenix wouldn't stand a chance chasing down the L.A. Lakers for 82 games, but 66? Why not.

And consider how jacked NBA fans are going to be for the tip after last season's epic NBA Finals matchup.

There are so many questions and storylines that will make this season memorable for all reasons not pertaining to the lockout, and we get to sit back and watch the answers.

Not only does this season start at exactly the right, Hollywood-scripted time, but it brings fans, players and owners just what they were dreaming of for Christmas.

Equal-opportunity NBA basketball.
