How Should Undertaker's Retirement Be Handled by the WWE?

Liam AbbeyContributor IDecember 21, 2008

This will pain me to even write, but The Undertaker's long career is coming to an end. His knees are in terrible condition, even by wrestling standards. The WWE must now sit down with The Undertaker and plan how he will bow out of something he has given so much to.

This will feel as morbid as discussing an old relatives well being or drawing up a will but, like both of those things, it is now the right thing to do. 'Taker is now suffering so bad the light schedule he has isn't nearly light enough for him to carry out the quality of matches we are used to seeing from the Deadman.

The words Big Show and Casket says it all. A friend of mine witnessed him tumble under the weight of Jeff Hardy last month and said it looked horrible seeing someones knees give out like that.

I don't think I need to prove to many people 'Taker's reign is nearly over, so we should concentrate on how it must end. This isn't that easy to think of the perfect way, as I have tried to think what I would like to see.

Firstly, Undertaker cannot lose like Flair did. Undertaker is the phenom and to make him lose after having a career where he won against all odds is wrong, so for me, 'Taker must win.

Second, if he is going to win, do it at Wrestlemania. His streak must remain intact, because he does deserve it. If Triple H took it away, everyone should stop watching the WWE because as good as The Game is, that's an ego boost of a gift.

Triple H does not need that, as his career is in the Vegas years as well and it would do him no benefit at all.

A young star is the only one who should of ended that streak and the only one who you could of said was worthy of it was Randy Orton. The best heel in the business could have gotten so much out of that, but his chance came and went. Maybe if the WWE trusted him more when he faced 'Taker at Wrestlemania, he may of ended it, but he was far too rebellious to trust.

Thirdly, who should his opponent be? I cannot think of one person who stands out as someone who should be his very last opponent. Kane, though his brother, cannot provide the quality of match we want to see and that 'Taker will want as his final match.

Nor can any big man, because I believe a lot of his better matches have been against smaller guys than him. When he has had his monster v monster matches against the likes of Great Khali, Big Show, Kane, etc they have been poor.

The only guy I think can really do it is Shawn Michaels. The problem is it feels unimaginative to have Shawn wrestle it so soon after retiring Ric Flair. However, we are sure of good match and they do have some history together as well. I'll leave this one to the comments, as I'm sure many of you will have someone who you think should be his opponent.

Lastly, is how The Undertaker finishes his career. He cannot go round crying and looking emotional like Flair, as it wouldn't be right. It was right for Flair but it doesn't seem right for The Undertaker. I have no problem, however, if he comes back out after the broadcast is over to do an out of character celebration. I would like it if he kept his on screen persona intact.

I would have him do an over-the-top exit to what he usually does with RIP, hand in the air, loads of druids etc. but with one added twist. As he puts his hand in the air the ring mat is set alight in the shape of his logo. A bit like when he had his logo on fire come down from the ceiling to scare The Rock.

Then, for one week, every show wrestles in a ring with 'Taker's logo burnt into the mat as a mark of respect. That would look really cool in my opinion. The Undertaker would literally be leaving his mark.

These are my thoughts on how it should be done and I hope for plenty of suggestions. This needs to be as good as Flair's, because truly The Undertaker is one of the greats of our industry.
