Roman Reigns to Have WWE World Title Match vs. Winner of Tournament With Raw, SmackDown, AAA Stars

WWE Hall of Famer and AAA general manager Rey Mysterio announced Wednesday that a tournament will be held to determine the challenger for Roman Reigns' World Heavyweight Championship on the Sept. 14 episode of Raw in Mexico City.

Mysterio noted that luchadores from Raw, SmackDown and AAA will compete in the tourney, which is set to begin on next Monday's edition of Raw in Norfolk, Virginia.

The announcement ensures that the first Raw to take place in Mexico in 15 years will be headlined by a massive main event that includes arguably the biggest star in pro wrestling in Reigns.

At the conclusion of this week's Raw, Reigns made his way through the curtain and encountered Mysterio, who was waiting to speak with him.

Mysterio suggested that he had a proposition for The OTC, and Raw went off the air with the two of them walking away, presumably to talk business.

That led to speculation about Reigns potentially making an appearance at AAA's Aug. 30 event in Edinburg, Texas, or at Triplemanía or Worlds Collide in September.

While all of that remains possible, the main product of the segment for now is Reigns' title defense against a Mexican wrestler in their home country.

That should make for a raucous and exciting atmosphere in Mexico City, as the fans figure to be entirely behind the tournament winner dethroning Reigns.

Although the bracket for the tournament has yet to be announced, several likely entrants were shown in a video package as part of Mysterio's announcement.

Based on who was shown, the odds-on favorite has to be Penta, who is among WWE's most popular stars, and is fresh off a successful, 152-day reign as intercontinental champion.

Reigns will be favored to retain regardless of his opponent, but Penta would perhaps be the biggest potential threat to him and the luchador most capable of making the crowd believe that he has a chance to pull off the upset.
