Virginia Tech vs. Syracuse: TV Schedule, Live Stream, Radio, Game Time and More

Eric BallNov 22, 2011

It's the semifinals of the NIT Season Tip-Off as Virginia Tech (3-0) meets No. 5 Syracuse (4-0) on Wednesday night.

The Orange are off to a terrific start thus far, with an average margin of victory of 32.5 points. They will be looking to win their fourth game in four meetings all-time against Virginia Tech.

The Hokies, meanwhile, are looking to get a huge non-conference win to boost their resume. They haven’t been to the NCAA Tournament since 2007 and have been one of the last teams on the outside looking in the past three years.

Beating the highly ranked Orange would be the sort of signature win that’s been missing the past few seasons. The Hokies have a grand total of one non-conference win against a team with an RPI in the Top 50 over the last three years.

The winner of this game will face the Oklahoma State-Stanford winner, which will also be played on Wednesday.

Key Matchup for Syracuse

‘Cuse has to contain V-Tech guard Dorenzo Hudson, who was just named ACC Co-Player of the Week after averaging 24.5 points and 2.5 assists in two victories. He is an efficient shooter that can create his own shot regardless of who is defending him.

After using a medical redshirt for the 2010-11 season, Hudson has emerged as the leader of the Hokies. Right now, his 19.3 PPG is third best in the ACC.

Key Matchup for Virginia Tech

Syracuse is almost impossible to stop offensively. They average 90 points a game, which is fifth best in the nation.

The Hokies need to really slow down the Orange and make this a half-court game, where the ball denial of V-Tech can disrupt the incredibly balanced Syracuse offense. Right now, five players average at least eight points for ‘Cuse. James Southerland (13.8 PPG), Dion Waiters (13.8 PPG) and Kris Joseph (13.5 PPG) lead the way.

What They’re Saying

Hudson is more than familiar with the Hokies' NCAA Tournament drought and knows how big this game is for when the committee is reviewing their resume in March. "I don’t feel like we need to spell it out," Hudson said to the Sporting News. "I feel like the returning guys, we know what we need to do. I feel like everybody’s ready to get over that hump. I feel like we just need to win the games that we need to win."

Prediction

The depth of Syracuse is going to be a huge factor Wednesday and for the entire season. When a team has the ability to go 10 deep, it puts all kinds of pressure on a fatigued defense to keep up.

V-Tech doesn’t have the depth or offensive firepower to do so. I think the Hokies are on the right track with the emergence of Hudson, but they aren’t in the same class as the No. 5 ranked team playing essentially a home game.
