NFL Power Rankings Week 10: Focus on the Pittsburgh Steelers

Rob BeloteNov 10, 2011

Nine weeks have passed in the NFL season, and it's time for me to bring my craziness here for you all to rip apart.

Each week the contributors at GuysNation get together and talk NFL. I take notes, factor in my perspective and formulate NFL Power Rankings. Are they perfect? I like to think so, but I like to have people tear apart my logic.

I take constructive criticism, and I can change my opinion accordingly if people make enough sense.

Power Rankings are complicated things, at least when I over-think and take into account the margin of victory, where the game was played, team momentum and—in some cases—how teams perform in the fourth quarter.

At 6-3, the Pittsburgh Steelers are easily in the Top 10, but Top Five? Let's look at their resume:

I don't begrudge them a week one loss to the Baltimore Ravens, since the game was in Baltimore. The 28-point differential? That was bad.

It was just one week, and though the Ravens are their rival, I don't have an issue with the loss.

Hosting the Seahawks and winning the game? No big deal, though I do like the 24-point margin of victory as a nice rebound from their deflating Week 1 outcome. The fact that it was a shutout win was also really good for their resume.

Going to Indianapolis and winning by a mere three points against a team that STILL doesn't have a victory? That's bad.

Losing to the Texans in Houston wasn't a bad outcome, but it did help me to decide where both of those teams shake out in the rankings.

I don't think anyone would say that a win over the mediocre Titans is a big deal, though I do like the 21-point margin of victory.

The follow-up, a win over the lowly Jaguars by a mere 4 points? Deflating, especially because it was contested in Pittsburgh.

Beating the Cardinals in Arizona by 12? Sounds like what a Top 10 team should do.

Beating the Patriots in Pittsburgh? As a potential playoff team, you would hope the Steelers would have the home-field advantage against a team going through difficulties like Belichick's squad is encountering these days.

Then comes the second Baltimore game.

The Steelers, with their loss to the Ravens in Pittsburgh, find themselves potentially on the outside of the playoffs looking in. The Bengals have a better record, and not only do the Ravens have a better record than Pittsburgh, but they also have two victories over them head-to-head.

All told, they have a decent resume, but teams with decent resumes can still miss the playoffs. This could feasibly keep them out of the Top 12 in the power rankings.

It didn't this time, but it could, which is not good. Everything factored in, I have them listed at No. 8.

If you want to check out the rest of the Power Rankings, you can view them over at GuysNation, and if you really want to hit me where it hurts or show me the love, that's where you'll leave your comments.

And here. Leave it both places, if you will, but you should bear in mind that FOLLOWing me on Twitter (@ GuysNation) and liking me on Facebook.com/GuysNation should almost be considered your civic duty...

...or at least maybe a gift for my upcoming birthday.

Or maybe it's just something you'll want to do because we have awesome articles, some of which include half-naked (or mostly naked) women hot enough to be in Playboy, which is true because most of them have already been in Playboy (like for reals).

We rule, bottom line.

And so does Bleacher Report, just in a different OMG SPORTY way.
