Who Is This Year's Jimmer? 5 Possible Candidates for Nation's Favorite Player

Sam SternbergNov 3, 2011

Last year, Jimmer Fredette was the center of attention in the college basketball world day-in and day-out. People all over America would turn on their televisions just to see how many points Jimmer had scored that night.

In a phenomenon known as Jimmermania, America fell in love with this little 6'2" guard Glen Falls, New York. Whether it was dropping 47 on Utah (32 in the first half), 43 on San Diego State, or 52 on New Mexico, people were in awe with Jimmer's abilities.

Jimmer was the kind of guy who wasn't afraid to shoot the moment he stepped in the gym and America loved that. Jimmer averaged 28.9 ppg, 3.4 rpg, and 4.3 apg, leading BYU to an overall record of 32-5, and a Sweet 16 appearance.

John Jenkins (Vanderbilt University)

1 of 5

This 6'4" guard from Hendersonville,Tennessee was named All-SEC after averaging 19.5 ppg. He led the SEC in scoring and helped Vanderbilt to a 23-10 record. In High School, Jenkins averaged 42.3 ppg.

Jenkins is one of the purest shooters in America, and will put up some big numbers for the Commodores. Many NBA scouts have compared him to Ray Allen. Jenkins will most likely average over 20 ppg.

Tu Holloway (Xavier University)

2 of 5

Many of you remember Tu Holloway from the famous Xavier vs. Kansas St. Sweet 16 game back in 2010. Holloway, then, was paired with Washington Wizards star Jordan Crawford, to lead the Musketeers to the Sweet 16.

Holloway excelled in the spotlight last year for the Musketeers as well, as he averaged 19.7 ppg, 5 rpg, and nearly 5.5 apg. He recorded two triple-doubles in wins over Fordham and Wake Forest, and led the Musketeers to a 24-8 record and an A-10 regular season conference title.

Xavier has lots of talent back with Holloway, but Holloway will be the engine that makes this team go.

Orlando Johnson (UC Santa Barbara)

3 of 5

Johnson is the Big West's little secret. The versatile forward put up big numbers last year averaging 21.1 ppg and 6.3 rpg. It's very difficult to describe Johnson as a player. He is phenomenal at using his body and posting up smaller defenders but also has the quickness to blow by bigger forwards. Shooting can sometimes be inconsistent but good form.

Johnson will likely put up well over 22 ppg this year and expect his rpg to increase as well.

CJ McCollum (Lehigh University)

4 of 5

McCollum averaged 21.8 ppg and 7.8 rpg as a sophomore. McCollum is a scoring threat both inside and out with excellent driving ability and deep range. McCollum is a 6'3" guard and averaged 7.8 rpg so hopefully this tells you something about McCollum's character.

McCollum was named preseason POY in the patriot league and will most likely average near 23 ppg.

DJ Cooper (Ohio University)

5 of 5

Many of you remember Cooper from Ohio's upset of Georgetown in the 2010 NCAA tournament. Then Cooper, as well as Armon Bassett, led the No. 14 seed Bobcats to a surprising win over the No. 3 seed Hoyas.

The Bobcats were out of much of the spotlight last year but Cooper put up big numbers averaging 16.2 ppg, 5.1 rpg, and 7.5 apg. A true Oscar Robertson type guy who gives you a little of everything.

I put him on this list because he is the only guy in the country that on any given night and can score 10, rebound 10, and assist 10. Expect Cooper to increase in all three categories this season.
