College Basketball Recruiting: Andrew Wiggins and the Top 15 Super Sophomores
The class of 2014 may only be sophomores in high school, but many of their top talents have the game to compete with the best juniors and seniors in all of America.
Over the coming years, you can guarantee that many new names and faces will rise to the top of the rankings, but right now, these 15 studs are the best that the United States has to offer. Headlined by Canadian-born Andrew Wiggins, here are the most sought-after recruits in the 2014 class, or as I like to refer to them as, the "Super Sophs."
1. Andrew Wiggins
1 of 15Height: 6'7"
Weight: 190 pounds
Position: Small Forward
High School: Huntington Prep (WV)
Analysis: Canadian-born Andrew Wiggins is the star of the sophomore class. He is a complete player at just 16 years old. He is a high-level athlete who is capable of driving the line and finishing strong in traffic, or draining jumpers from the outside on his helpless defenders. A surefire NBA player, with three years of high school remaining. Scary.
2. Jahlil Okafor
2 of 15Height: 6'10
Weight: 280 pounds
Position: Center
High School: Whitney Young High School (IL)
Analysis: If you're looking for the mammoth center prospect in the sophomore class, look no further than Chicago's Jahlil Okafor. The true center has good hands to match his soft scoring touch around the hole. He uses his massive body to create for himself down low, and rebounds and blocks shots extremely well. A surefire Top 5 prospect for the next three years.
3. Noah Vonleh
3 of 15Height: 6'7"
Weight: 190 pounds
Position: Small Forward
High School: New Hampton Prep (NH)
Analysis: The agile 6'7" small forward has a tremendous handle for a player his size. He uses his long arms for tip-dunk and tip-in opportunities as well as rebounding. He is a more-than-capable shot blocker and can bury jump shots from outside. He has tremendous upside and has only scratched the surface of his potential on the basketball court.
4. Theo Pinson
4 of 15Height: 6'5"
Weight: 170 pounds
Position: Shooting Guard
High School: Wesleyan Christian Academy (NC)
Analysis: Most players who have his size at a young age end up playing frontcourt positions while growing up, then having to develop guard skills at the high school level. Pinson isn't in this category. He is a guard, and he knows it. He has tremendous court vision to go along with his acrobatic drives into the lane that seem to always end in buckets. His handle is also advanced for his age, and he easily could transition to a 6'5" point guard by the time his high school career is over.
5. Dakari Johnson
5 of 15Height: 6'10"
Weight: 265 pounds
Position: Center
High School: Montverde Academy (FL)
Analysis: The other big-time center in the 2014 class is Dakari Johnson. The 6'10" center spent his freshman season playing for nationally-ranked St. Patrick's High School (NJ). After head coach Kevin Boyle left for the prestigious Montverde Academy, the big man followed. Though he will be sitting out this season due to transfer rules, expect to see a much-improved player when he finally suits up for the school as a gigantic junior.
6. Tyus Jones
6 of 15Height: 6'1"
Weight: 175 pounds
Position: Point Guard
High School: Apple Valley High School (MN)
Analysis: Hands down the best pure point guard in the sophomore class. The 6'1" dribbling wizard has a feel for the game that not many have at the high school level. He may add another inch or so to his frame, considering his father is 6'6". Growth spurt or not, Jones is the leading candidate to leave high school as the best point guard prospect in the 2014 graduating class.
7. Emmanuel Mudiay
7 of 15Height: 6'4"
Weight: 185 pounds
Position: Point Guard
High School: Grace Prep (TX)
Analysis: The competition for Tyus Jones' top point guard spot in this class is Texas native Emmanuel Mudiay. What he lacks in basketball I.Q, he makes up for in explosiveness. If you are looking for ways to compare the two star point guards, equate Jones to Deron Williams and Mudiay to Derrick Rose. He is also jet-quick and a great defender.
8. Wayne Selden
8 of 15Height: 6'4"
Weight: 220
Position: Shooting Guard
High School: The Tilton School (NH)
Analysis: The most explosive player in the 2014 class, powerfully-built shooting guard Wayne Selden is a highlight waiting to happen. Think of Bill Walker 2.0. He may not be quite as athletic as Walker was in high school, but he has a better jump shot at the same stage of his high school career. Forms a downright scary tandem with Nerlens Noel at The Tilton School.
9. Trey Lyles
9 of 15Height: 6'8"
Weight: 215 pounds
Position: Power Forward
High School: Arsenal Technical High School (IN)
Analysis: The young power forward has a very refined game that belies his age. He has solid post moves and can dominate you with finesse or power. He also has a reliable jump shot out to 18 feet or so. If you are looking for a comparison, think former Tennessee Volunteer and NBA rookie Tobias Harris.
10. Cliff Alexander
10 of 15Height: 6'9"
Weight: 240 pounds
Position: Power Forward
High School: Curie High School (IL)
Analysis: At this point in his career, Alexander is more of a space eater than anything. He rebounds well and is a defensive standout. He lacks a big-time offensive game, but that will come in the future. Like they say, "You can't teach size", and he certainly has it. Look for a standout career in the vaunted Chicago Public League.
11. Justin Jackson
11 of 15Height: 6'5"
Weight: 165 pounds
Position: Small Forward
High School: HYCA
Analysis: The lengthy Justin Jackson is your typical future defensive star at the college level. He has long arms to disrupt passing lanes, and will also block and alter countless shots by opposing guards. However, he also has a rapidly-improving offensive game. He excels in transition and is a reliable jump shooter.
12. Isaiah Whitehead
12 of 15Height: 6'4"
Weight: 170 pounds
Position: Shooting Guard
High School: Lincoln High School (NY)
Analysis: Isaiah Whitehead follows in the enormous footsteps of past Coney Island stars Stephon Marbury, Sebastian Telfair, and Lance Stephenson. Will he be the next NBA player to rise from Lincoln High School? Only time will tell, but the youngster is well on his way after leading Lincoln's team during his freshman season.
13. Chris McCullough
13 of 15Height: 6'8"
Weight: 200 pounds
Position: Power Forward
High School: Salisbury School (CT)
Analysis: The Bronx native is a power forward in the mold of a less athletic Derrick Williams. He is capable of impacting a game in many ways, especially on the defensive end of the floor. He has a solid jump shot out to 20 feet, and he will only add muscle to his frame.
14. Shaqquan Aaron
14 of 15Height: 6'8"
Weight: 170 pounds
Position: Small Forward
High School: Taft High School (CA)
Analysis: The lengthy SoCal guard spent his freshman season at famed Mater Dei High School. He made waves this spring when he decided to transfer to Taft High School, Jordan Farmar's alma mater. Look for the talented offensive player to take over games for the next three years while playing in Los Angeles.
15. Paul White
15 of 15Height: 6'8"
Weight: 200 pounds
Position: Small Forward
High School: Whitney Young High School (IL)
Analysis: Paul White is going to be one of the absolute stars of the sophomore class. For a 6'8" swingman, he does a little bit of everything. He thrives on taking the ball to the basket, where he acrobatically finishes in traffic. He is always a threat to throw down a ferocious dunk on the fast break, and is equally effective nailing jump shots out to the three-point line. With Jahlil Okafor and Paul White manning the frontcourt at Whitney Young for the next three years, the Chicago Public League better watch out.
