Occupy NBA: Should NBA Fans Go to the Full Court Press?

Joe BarnathanOct 29, 2011

It’s no secret that Occupy Wall Street has taken over the headlines of late. For many people, they are upset about the distribution of wealth in this country and feel the need to take action.

I don’t think we need to get political here, however I think Occupy Wall Street can teach an important lesson to NBA fans.

Now, in no way am I saying the current NBA Lockout is the same thing as what is happening on Wall Street. What I am saying, however, is that we NBA fans ought to be inspired by their action.

Many people have said that the struggle with the NBA lockout is hard to relate to because it is millionaires versus billionaires. I agree. I think it’s time we let them know that.

No, we are not struggling to hold those on Wall Street accountable, but we should consider letting both sides of the NBA lockout know that we are not going to let them destroy the NBA season without getting our voices heard.

It simply isn’t fair that the $4 billion in revenue comes from us, the consumer, and we have no representation in this battle.

The truth is, there is no one speaking on behalf of the fans. Maybe this is the time for us to join the conversation.

We’ve now lost a full month of the NBA season and the chance of a full 82 game schedule is gone.

Doesn’t that upset you?

As an avid NBA fan it really breaks my heart that the owners and players can’t figure out how to divide their massive earnings in time to save the game we love.

Unfortunately a lot of this comes down to basic economics: finding a balance between supply and demand for a very specialized labor force. We can’t blame the owners and players for that.

What we can blame them for is putting economics before the loyalty of their fanbase.

If you’re as annoyed as I am, perhaps we ought to do something about it.

We need our own Occupy Wall Street.

Frankly, I like the phrase Full Court Press. When it’s late in the game, the pressure is on, and you desperately need to make something happen, you go to the Full Court Press.

That’s what NBA fans should do. They need to make something happen.

If you feel the way I do, perhaps you should join me. Who knows, maybe it’ll catch on and the players and owners will finally take notice.

So this is the next step: start Tweeting, Facebook, Tumblr, and everything else that people use. Let people know of your frustration. Take part in the Full Court Press.

Spread the word.

Let the NBA you aren’t going to sit by idly and watch the NBA season you love so much just wither away and die.

I know I won’t.
