CC Sabathia Headed To Yankees: What's Next?

Tab BamfordDec 9, 2008

The Hefty Lefty has landed, and (shockingly) it's in the Bronx.

The New York Yankees have reportedly agreed in principle on a seven-year, $160 million deal with free agent starting pitcher CC Sabathia. The deal will be finalized pending a physical soon.

And the classic Van Morrison song Domino pops into my head.

Now that Sabathia has made his decision, coupled with top closer Francisco Rodriguez also looking for a new condo in Manhattan after joining the Mets, one would figure that the movement at the Winter Meetings would begin to move.

A.J. Burnett has been rumored to be on the verge of receiving a guaranteed fifth year on a deal from the Atlanta Braves to join recently acquired Javier Vazquez in their rotation.

Ben Sheets, even though he left his final start of the season against the Cubs with an arm issue, has been linked to nearly every team looking at starting pitching this winter. Boston, the Yankees, Texas, and Atlanta have all surfaced as potential landing spots for the former Olympic hero.

And then there's Jake Peavy, who appears to have a choice of only two homes left.

Padres GM Kevin Towers has made it clear he is only talking to the Chicago Cubs about the 2007 Cy Young winner. Problem is, the Cubs have a bankrupt corporation that owns them (for now) and they have a fifth starter they didn't trust to put on the mound in September last year set to make $9.875 million this coming season (Jason Marquis).

Perhaps the next domino to fall will be one of the big bats on the market. While Manny Ramirez and his agent, Scott Boras, appear to be living a pipe dream that someone will give Manny a three or four year contract worth upwards of $25-30 million a season, he is still the best clutch hitter of the past decade.

Will the Angels pull the trigger and keep first baseman Mark Teixiera? Or will his hometown Nationals throw enough money at him, and paint a vivid enough picture of him being the centerpiece of a legitimate building project? (It would have to be a building project; they haven't had anything to rebuild since Marquis Grissom left Montreal.)

One general manager to watch will be the White Sox's Kenny Williams. He has already made two fairly significant deals, sending Vazquez to Atlanta and Nick Swisher to the Yankees. His stockpile of young arms and a perceived need for a centerfielder and fourth and fifth starters, added to the daily rumors of Jermaine Dye or Bobby Jenks being on the move, make him one individual who could shake up the Winter Meetings.
