Tony La Russa SportsCenter Commercial: Watch ESPN Spoof La Russa's Phone Fiasco

Adam WellsOct 26, 2011

St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa is still the laughingstock of the sports world after accusing the Texas Rangers of having faulty phones that prevented his bullpen coach from understanding what pitcher he wanted warming up.

The whole incident has gotten so ridiculous that ESPN, the worldwide leader in sports and entertainment, decided to spoof it on "SportsCenter" Tuesday afternoon.

I won't lie—ESPN's best or funniest spoof, and it certainly had nothing on some of the parodies of them that we have seen on "Saturday Night Live" or the ESPYs

That said, the cameo by Barry Melrose did make me chuckle. He makes hockey interesting, so his greatness can't be defined, and he steals the show yet again in this parody.

I think that what would have worked better is if ESPN had waited until after the World Series was over, called Tony La Russa and offered him a chance to do a "SportsCenter" commercial. They could have gotten some great material out of that.

Although that might not work—La Russa doesn't strike me as the kind of person that has a sense of humor about himself.

I don't believe that he has laughed about the sheer idiocy of this whole situation. In fact, it seems like he keeps wanting to talk about it and bury himself even deeper.

Even if La Russa isn't able to poke fun at himself, we certainly are able to do it for him. Maybe in the offseason he can stop for a moment and think about this whole thing and roll on the floor laughing, or at least let out a chuckle of some sort.

Seriously, Tony, you are in the World Series—lighten up a little bit.
