Can Tim Tebow Be the Denver Broncos' Franchise Quarterback?

Tony SantorsaOct 19, 2011

This is it. The moment that we have all been waiting for—or at least in my world: Tim Tebow's season debut as the Denver Broncos' starting quarterback.

Yeah, that's right, it's Tebow Time!

Tebow and the Broncos will be coming fresh off of a bye this weekend to pay a visit to South Beach to take on the Miami Dolphins

Now this is the question that we're all wondering: How well will Tebow play as Denver's starting quarterback for the remainder of the season?

Well for starters, it certainly helps that Tebow was named the team's starting quarterback about a week ago during the team's bye week. From that point on, Tebow took all of the snaps with the team's first offense and he definitely has gotten plenty of reps in order to prepare himself for Sunday against the Dolphins.

The matchup against Miami is definitely a major advantage for Tebow and the Broncos. Thus far this season, Miami's defense opposing quarterback rating is a dreadful 103.9—good enough for third worst in the entire NFL

Along with Miami's terrible opposing quarterback rating, the team has allowed the 13th most passing yards, the 14th highest completion percentage, the highest average yards per completion and the third least total sacks—all of these stats are by far in Tebow's favor.

In Tebow's lone appearance as a quarterback this season came in last week's loss against the San Diego Chargers. No. 15 may have only completed four of his 10 passes for 79 yards but did throw a touchdown and he also added a score on the ground.

Last season during the final three weeks of the season, Tebow received the shot at being the team's starting quarterback to give the team a large sample size to evaluate his potential as a possible franchise quarterback.

In those three games, Tebow faced a middle-of-the-road in the Oakland Raiders, a well below average defense in the Houston Texans and last year's top defense in the San Diego Chargers. As a rookie, Tebow won one of those three games as he posted a 77.8 quarterback rating with four touchdowns compared to three interceptions.

If you take Tebow's stats from those three games and projected them over a 16-game season they'd look like this: 76.5 quarterback rating, 3,472 yards, 21 touchdowns compared to 16 interceptions—definitely not too shabby.

But how would Tebow have stacked up against last year's offensive rookie of the year, Sam Bradford

Well, they have the identical quarterback rating at 76.5, Tebow would have thrown less yards and just one interception less than Bradford, but Tebow could have thrown three more touchdowns than Bradford. So what does this mean? Tebow would have made a strong case for rookie of the year with those projections.

However when we're discussing Tim Tebow, it's almost like that stats aren't that significant with the guy—that sounds strange, doesn't it? But look what the great coach Bill Belichick once said: "Stats are for losers, final scores are for winners."—this certainly applies with Tebow. What is the final product?

With Tebow, all throughout his life he's been a winner and it certainly appears that he possesses that winner-mentality and that hunger for success and it has certainly translated onto the field as he sparks the team's performance.

Scouts, experts, analysts and fans all written off Tim Tebow far too quickly—just like how they did with Cam Newton, but look at how well he's doing. In my opinion, Tebow is a bit more talented than Newton and definitely has a far more decorated resume than this past year's first overall draft pick.

What we need to do as NFL fans, experts and analysts is simply wait and see what Tebow has to offer—on paper, from what I have provided, it all directs to success. Argue all you want, but Tebow has all the tools, talent and upset to be a winning franchise quarterback in the NFL for many years to come.

The Tim Tebow era starts this Sunday against the Miami Dolphins—brace yourself.
