Utah Jazz: 10 Creative Lineup Combinations Tyrone Corbin Can Use Next Season
Tyrone Corbin will have plenty of options for a starting lineup when the season finally begins. He could go with all young guys or a mix of young players and veterans.
With a changing environment in Utah, the options for Corbin are almost endless. He could do almost anything with the players that are currently on the roster. When the season begins there will be some free agents added and some possible trades taking place.
This article will explore the options with the roster as it is currently constituted, with one exception. There are many more than the ones I will mention as well. Feel free to comment and let me know your favorite or if you have a better one.
10. Last Year Traditional
1 of 10Center: Al Jefferson
Power Forward: Paul Millsap
Small Forward: C.J. Miles
Shooting Guard: Raja Bell
Point Guard: Devin Harris
This lineup is a familiar one that the Jazz went with many times last year. The one difference is the inclusion of Devin Harris instead of Deron Williams.
Harris will be the point guard on almost all the different lineup combinations, because he is currently the only point guard under contract for the Jazz.
This lineup is not my favorite, but it is a possibility for Tyrone Corbin if he wants to go with veterans instead of young players. I don't expect this lineup to happen very often, but it is at least a possibility.
9. Traditional Adds One New Face
2 of 10Center: Al Jefferson
Power Forward: Paul Millsap
Small Forward: Gordon Hayward
Shooting Guard: Raja Bell
Point Guard: Devin Harris
This lineup is the same as No. 10, but with one change. Gordon Hayward starts instead of C.J. Miles. This lineup was seen a few times at the end of the season and really helped Gordon Hayward progress as a scorer.
I think that this lineup is an improvement over the last one, but it is still lacking and we can do better. The Jazz have been a team of little change in the past, so this is a possibility for sure. However, with Tyrone Corbin and the new look Jazz, change is inevitable.
8. Big Lineup
3 of 10Center: Enes Kanter
Power Forward: Al Jefferson
Small Forward: Paul Millsap
Shooting Guard: Gordon Hayward
Point Guard: Devin Harris
This is actually more of a fantasy lineup than reality, but imagine the possibilities. With bigger than average bodies at every position, except point guard, the Jazz would definitely have a height advantage over almost every other team in the league.
This should help them get plenty of rebounds and blocked shots. It also depends a lot on Paul Millsap's shooting ability. He would need to improve his outside shooting drastically in order to play small forward. This would help clear up the log jam of big men underneath, but it is up to Millsap.
He showed us flashes of his shooting ability last year. Draining multiple three pointers against the Heat was one example. If Millsap could develop a solid perimeter game, this lineup would be a great one for Utah.
7. Speed and High Fliers
4 of 10Center: Derrick Favors
Power Forward: Jeremy Evans
Small Forward: C.J. Miles
Shooting Guard: Alec Burks
Point Guard: Devin Harris
If the Jazz were interested in playing an up-tempo offense like Golden State or Phoenix, this is the lineup to consider. It features quickness and speed at every position. These five guys may not be the best at each position, but it would be a game of fast breaks for the Jazz.
These guys can play above the rim as well. Favors, Evans and Burks are known for throwing down some nasty dunks, they can posterize an opponent at any moment. When Jeremy Evans steps onto the court, Jazz fans are in for an alley-oop for sure.
This would be a fun team to watch. I don't think they could win a lot of games with this starting lineup, but they would have some highlights to watch after the game for sure.
6. Harris Injury
5 of 10Center: Al Jefferson
Power Forward: Derrick Favors
Small Forward: Gordon Hayward
Shooting Guard: C.J. Miles
Point Guard: Alec Burks
If the Jazz played with their roster as it stands right now they have only one point guard. If Devin Harris got injured and there was no backup point guard, what would happen?
The Jazz would have to adjust their lineup with a couple of decent ball handlers and bring the ball up the court as a committee. Burks and Miles are both good ball handlers and could manage for a game or two.
Jefferson and Hayward would be the main scorers with this offense. Derrick Favors would be a defensive presence underneath to stop the speedy point guards that would get by Burks and Miles.
The Jazz will get a backup point guard for the upcoming season, but as of right now, this is what they would have to try.
5. Veteran Lineup
6 of 10Center: Mehmet Okur
Power Forward: Al Jefferson
Small Forward: C.J. Miles
Shooting Guard: Raja Bell
Point Guard: Devin Harris
This is what the lineup would look like if the Jazz used their most experienced NBA players at each position. It is titled "Veteran Lineup" but you still have some young guys in the middle of their careers.
Jefferson, Miles and Harris are all still under 30 and have plenty of years left in the league. Bell and Okur are on their last legs. This is the most veteran lineup that the Jazz can put on the court. It just shows how young the Jazz really are.
4. All Youth
7 of 10Center: Enes Kanter
Power Forward: Derrick Favors
Small Forward: Jeremy Evans
Shooting Guard: Gordon Hayward
Point Guard: Alec Burks
This is the lineup completely opposite of the last one. These players have three NBA seasons under their belts, combined. Three one year players and two rookies.
This is a young, energetic bunch that is full of potential. This would probably never be a useful lineup with Evans and Burks out of position. If Tyrone Corbin wanted to experiment with guys with little experience, here they are.
Corbin may use all of these players to some extent, but this lineup will probably never be on the floor at the same time. It would be a fun experiment, but there needs to be a balance of experience with youth.
3. Foreign Lineup
8 of 10Center: Enes Kanter
Power Forward: Mehmet Okur
Small Forward: Andrei Kirilenko
Shooting Guard: Raja Bell
Point Guard: Devin Harris
This is the only slide that features a player that is not currently under contract with the Jazz. Andrei Kirilenko's contact has expired and he is not a member of the Jazz right now. The reason he is included is that I think he will re-sign with Utah after the lockout and be a part of the team again. He is also the most successful foreign born player that the Jazz have had.
I realize that Devin Harris is from the United States and therefore is not foreign. He is the only point guard on the team and so he gets the start. Okur and Kanter bring a similar game to the table. Both men are offensive threats from the outside and lacking on the defensive end.
Raja Bell rounds out the foreign cast. The veteran from the Virgin Islands, along with Kirilenko, brings a defensive presence to the lineup. This actually isn't a terrible lineup and could do some damage against other teams in the league.
2. Rookies Get the Start
9 of 10Center: Enes Kanter
Power Forward: Al Jefferson
Small Forward: Gordon Hayward
Shooting Guard: Alec Burks
Point Guard: Devin Harris
This lineup would give the two lottery picks from the 2011 Draft a chance to play more minutes. Neither would have to be a huge scorer. Jefferson and Hayward can take care of the scoring. This lineup would give the rookies a chance to gain valuable experience with little pressure.
I think that the presence of Jefferson underneath would allow Kanter to step out and hit some perimeter jump shots and give him more space to shoot. Burks and Hayward would feed off of each other as well. Burks is a dynamic lane penetrator and Hayward is a finesse perimeter threat.
This lineup could work out well for the Jazz. Especially with guys like Paul Millsap and Derrick Favors waiting to come off the bench.
1. Lineup of the Present and Future
10 of 10Center: Al Jefferson
Power Forward: Derrick Favors
Small Forward: Gordon Hayward
Shooting Guard: Alec Burks
Point Guard: Devin Harris
This is the lineup that Tyrone Corbin should really consider starting. It combines the youth of the Jazz with talent and experience. Derrick Favors and Gordon Hayward showed signs of improvement at the end of last season when they got more playing time. Both players could develop into very good, if not great, players in the NBA.
Alec Burks is someone that could go either way. If he can develop a consistent jump shot, he will become a very good player as well. If he can't improve in that aspect he will struggle in the NBA. He has the size and determination to be great though.
The Jazz are in for a bright future and this lineup could be a part of it.
