Bryant Gumbel Video: Watch HBO Host Call NBA's David Stern a "Plantation Owner"
Sometimes television offers the fans some of the most cringe-worthy programming imaginable and Bryant Gumbel offered us another shining example of how to make people feel awkward.
During the HBO Real Sports show that Gumbel hosts, the topic of the NBA lockout and NBA commissioner David Stern was brought up and Gumbel went off.
Gumbel is a soft spoken man that rarely gets this emotional about things, but he used his eloquent speech to chastise the NBA big man with a spattering of hard comparisons.
While Gumbel’s tone make you feel comfortable, the verbal attack on Stern catches you off guard and it’s a 60-second car crash after that.
You can’t help but sit back in awe as the host of Real Sports launches into one of the most epic rants about how Stern only cares about his legacy and looks down on the NBA players.
The shoot promo Gumbel lays down was crazy already, but when he describes Stern as a “Plantation Overseer” I nearly fell out of my chair.
There is no way that anyone should compare anything in the sports or business world to something as tragic as slavery and every person, player or public official that mentions slavery in comparison to anything is instantly labeled by it.
While I agree that David Stern may be trying to rule the NBA like a dictator, to compare any human being to a slave owner is far too harsh any way you look at it.
I expect Bryant Gumbel to know that and he deserves the backlash that he is sure to receive.
