2012 MLB Free Agency: 5 Teams Who Will Fight over Prince Fielder

Jared FeldmanOct 18, 2011

The Brewers playoff run is over and with it, most likely too is Prince Fielder's career in Milwaukee.

While the Brewers will try their best to re-sign Fielder, ultimately their budget won't allow them to do so. Fielder will look elsewhere to continue his booming career.

He averages 38 home runs per full season, and there are a number of teams that are in desperate need of his services.

Chicago Cubs

1 of 5

Eventually, Theo Epstein will be the Cubs GM.

Once it is official, Epstein will want to make a splash with a big-name free agent.

The Cubs aren't going to maintain Carlos Pena, and Prince Fielder is the perfect replacement candidate. He would solidify the Cubs lineup for the next half-decade, if they pay the price.

San Francisco Giants

2 of 5

The Giants have publicly said they don't have the money to pursue players of Fielder's pay grade, however they very much should reconsider.

The Giants first base situation is stuck between a pair of unprovens and one over the hill.

They've got plenty of cash in their pockets from last year's World Series and need to spend it, if they want to compete next year.

Fielder's swing in AT&T could yield many more splash hits.

Los Angeles Dodgers

3 of 5

The Dodgers remain in Frank McCourt's possession and if they can get a TV deal okayed, plenty of greenbacks will flow to Chavez Ravine.

James Loney is probably on his way out, and a power-hitting first baseman would be the appropriate replacement.

Fielder could add a 20-home run upgrade over Loney and combined with Andre Either and Matt Kemp, the Dodgers could have the most potent middle of the order in the NL.

Los Angeles Angels

4 of 5

The Angels offense completely collapsed at the end of the recently ended regular season. They need consistent offense.

The return of Kendrys Morales is uncertain, given his status the past two seasons and a solid, healthy first baseman like Prince Fielder.

Fielder could give the Angels a presence in the middle of the lineup that could boost the team's chances in 2012.

Texas Rangers

5 of 5

This one is a bit more of a long shot.

The Rangers already have a tremendous offense and have won the AL pennant the last two years.

The one position where the Rangers aren't set is at first base. Mike Napoli and Mitch Moreland have spent time at first, but Napoli belongs at catcher and Moreland should be relegated to the bench.

Anyway, no team can say no to more offense. Fielder at first would give the Rangers possibly the greatest offense of recent history, certainly more than the Yankees of the past few decades.

While the Rangers would probably do best to pursue pitching, Fielder at first would be a terrifying proposition.
