Shaquille O'Neal as NBA Owner Does Nothing but Good for League
Shaquille O'Neal was one of the most dynamic players on and off the court in the history of the NBA.
When Shaq was in his prime, not a week would go by without him in the headlines for something he did either on the court or some outrageous statement he made when a microphone was put in his face.
He was good for basketball. He brought character to the players.
It's been rumored for awhile that he has shown interest in owning an NBA team. That interest has been confirmed by Shaq in an interview with the New York Times.
When asked about his interest, Shaq responded, "Yes. And I’m looking forward to bringing a team to Newark. I haven’t spoken to Mayor Booker about it yet, but I’m working on it. I know Newark can support an N.B.A. team. And I’m going to be one of the guys that’s going to bring a team there."
There is one thing that I can guarantee: Having Shaq in the spotlight in the NBA could do nothing but bring good to the sport.
It's unclear whether or not Shaq would make a good owner. Great players don't necessarily make great owners in any sports business.
It would be fun to watch unfold.
The only real question at this point is where Shaq would get the money to buy a team. He may be rich, but not many people realize how much money it takes to own an NBA team. Hopefully he has something planned. Hopefully one day he does become an owner.
