Carson Palmer Trade: Vince Young and 9 QBs Who Would've Looked Better in Oakland
These aren't your daddy's Oakland Raiders.
The days of Ken Stabler, Otis Sistrunk, Ted Hendricks and Dave Dalby are gone. Gone are quarterbacks Vince Evans, Rich Gannon and Jim Plunkett.
Who can forget the heated fight on the sideline between Jeff Hostetler and Art Shell that left the quarterback's chin quivering?
Yes, these Raiders are run under a different captain and a different set of directors, and the Al Davis Era that was is no longer intact. Only the Raiders, the Cowboys or the Redskins would have made a trade like this for Carson Palmer for two first round draft picks.
Only in the NFL can you pay such a high price for a player three years removed from a major knee injury where Palmer returned to the game, but hasn't been anywhere near what he was before the injury in the 2006 playoffs.
So did the Raiders pay too much? Probably. Will they get a good quarterback? Hopefully. Are there other quarterbacks who could have played in Oakland and looked better in Silver and Black? Good possibility.
Here are 10 quarterbacks who could have helped the Raiders just as much, if not more, and maybe would have been cheaper to acquire.
David Garrard
1 of 10It was reported that the Raiders inquired about the former Jaguars starter, but Garrard announced yesterday that he would be undergoing surgery on a herniated disc in his back.
Garrard has been plagued by back pain most of his playing career that actually started while he was in college at East Carolina.
Garrard can manage a game well, and his 10 years in the league means he would have been a good choice to step in and keep the flow of the Raiders offense.
And most off all, he would have had better weapons to work with then he did in Jacksonville.
Colt McCoy
2 of 10If McCoy is not the long term answer in Cleveland, could he be the long term solution in Oakland?
Doubtful. But the idea of a guy with a gunslinger's name going to the West Coast to play for a team that prides itself on being the badasses of the league has a nice ring to it.
Rex Grossman
3 of 10He was benched by Washington head coach Mike Shanahan during the Redskins' loss to Philadelphia.
Was it his unraveling and would a new team want the former Super Bowl quarterback?
Anything is possible. Grossman proved this season he could play, but he also is very streaky, and he needs a team that will work on the short passing game and allow the run to set up the pass.
Oakland is that team.
Charlie Batch
4 of 10I like him as a backup and part-time starter.
This team did not need to give up on Jason Campbell so quick, even with the injury.
Batch is an effective veteran leader who would work well to help bring along the younger players in the passing game.
Batch manages a game as a reserve better than most starters do today.
David Carr
5 of 10He is Eli Manning's primary back-up in New York. Moving to a warmer climate would serve him well and maybe give him a chance to start again.
The last time Carr started in the NFL was 2006 for the Houston Texans, when he threw for over 2,700 yards.
He has a good arm, and I think he could be an effective replacement for the rest of the season, or until Campbell comes back.
Derek Anderson
6 of 10As Cam Newton's primary backup, Anderson does not figure to see the field unless there is an injury.
Could he show promise again as a starter in the NFL?
Anderson is tall, 6'6", and has a strong arm. He started in the NFL for both Cleveland and Arizona before signing with the Panthers.
He could have been a decent stop-gap measure for this team.
Brady Quinn
7 of 10I assume he is now Tim Tebow's primary backup in Denver. Oh, how two weeks changes everything.
Quinn did not pan out on Cleveland, and you thought he may get a chance to start in Mile High. But John Fox listened to the fans, and the fact is, Tebow appears to be the future of this team, or that the coaching staff needs to see if he is.
Quinn has a good arm, and Denver was a good place for him to try and resurrect his career. But with the sudden change in the quarterback situation, Oakland may have been a better place.
Matt Flynn
8 of 10Flynn is an unknown commodity in the NFL.
Well, many fans do not know about him. But the Green Bay Packers sure do.
He is the backup to Aaron Rodgers and could start for about a dozen NFL teams right now.
He is being groomed for the future if he is needed, but he also could bring a king's ransom if he is traded and he delivers on his ability.
Kyle Orton
9 of 10He now wants out of Denver. And what better way to stick it to Broncos brass than go to the enemy?
This is not the same thing as Marcus Allen signing with the Kansas City Chiefs, but seeing your former starting quarterback in Silver and Black just adds fuel to the fire in a division that is always the shade of black and blue.
Vince Young
10 of 10He is just waiting on the Eagles sideline, biding his time.
Young needed a change of scenery from Tennessee, and he got that in Philadelphia. Only problem is, there is this guy named Michael Vick playing in front of him.
Young could move the Raiders' offense, and the idea of the mobile passer and runner in the same backfield with Darren McFadden and Michael Bush, as well as receivers like Darius Heyward-Bey, Jacoby Ford and Louis Murphy is down right scary.
