NBA Lockout Video: Watch Comedy Central's Stephen Colbert Joke About NBA Lockout

Richard LangfordOct 18, 2011

Stephen Colbert has a talent for being able to put everything in perspective by being even more absurd than an absurd reality. This makes him a natural to talk about the NBA lockout.

Colbert took to riffing on the NBA lockout on Monday night's Colbert Report. And he really leaves no stone unturned.

The attached video is just a sampling of all Colbert had to offer. Here is the full clip as found on the show's website.

Not surprisingly, Colbert aligns himself with the owners. "Let's talk about the real victims here: the owners."

Colbert felt so bad for the owners that he put the muscle of his Colbert Super Pac behind their cause. Colbert made a commercial supporting the owners for reasons that included "they are the No. 1 employer of tiny blimp pilots."

While making his case that people should side with the owners it becomes apparent that no one should side with the owners. This is Colbert's gift.

However, his point was not to set up sympathy for the players either. This segment highlights the arrogance and self-importance of the whole situation.

And that self-important arrogance starts with David Stern. Which is the way Colbert starts off his riff. Stern announced that he didn't think they would be playing games on Christmas, as if the public should be outraged at the loss of this tradition that isn't really all that traditional.

The NBA needs to get over this labor impasse because it isn't going to prove hard for the public to get over the NBA. This Colbert segment was more entertaining than two-thirds of the regular season games.
