Carson Palmer Raiders Trade: 4 Bold Predictions for QB's Season in Oakland
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, former Cincinnati Bengals' QB Carson Palmer is now an Oakland Raider:
""Carson Palmer to the Raiders now official. Compensation expected to be a 1 in 2012 and a conditional 1 in 2013."
"
This is definitely an upgrade for the Raiders under center from Kyle Boller and with Jason Campbell being out.
And with that said, here are four bold predictions of the new QB in silver and black.
Throws for over 2,000 Yards
1 of 4Although he's thrown for quite a bit more, obviously missing six games will have him throwing for less yards.
And, don't expect Carson Palmer to attempt more than 200 passes (more on that later).
However, he will still toss for over 2,000 yards because Oakland has arguably the most explosive and fastest WRs in the game.
There's going to be a lot of "hidden yards" that Carson Palmer throws for, but it'll mostly be yards after the catch since the Raiders' receivers need the ball.
The philosophy here should be to get the ball out quickly and let the athletes make the plays.
With Palmer under center, he provides that experience to give Oakland's offense an added dimension that Kyle Boller does not.
To sum it up, Palmer's going to have a high yards-per-completion average.
Not to mention using the run to set up play-action for the deep ball.
TD/INT Ratio of 14/8
2 of 4Palmer's best season, when it comes to strictly TDs and INTs, was in 2005, when he had a ratio of 32/12.
The closest he ever came to that TD/INT ratio in subsequent seasons was in 2007 and 2010. He went 26/20 both years.
While in Oakland he will throw for good yardage, but anytime the Raiders get near the red zone or in it, it's all about Darren McFadden and Michael Bush.
They are also still the focal point of the Oakland offense, but Palmer should hit about 14 TDs, and most of those will come from 20-plus.
He is also somewhat prone to throwing picks, but for as much as they're going to run the ball, he won't throw any more than eight.
Attempts Less Than 200 Passes
3 of 4Now we get to why he's only going to throw for 2,000 yards.
It would obviously be more, but Carson Palmer has never been a part of a rushing attack like Run DMC and Michael Bush in Oakland.
They're arguably the best two-back tandem in the NFL, and currently Oakland ranks No. 2 in rushing offense.
Make no mistake about it, Palmer is a step up from Boller, and he's more established than Jason Campbell.
However, McFadden is the key to their success.
Palmer just gives Oakland a more viable threat under center because he's thrown for over 3,000 yards five times, and 4,000 twice.
But the ground-pound is where it's at in Oakland. Darren McFadden will be the best RB Carson Palmer's ever played with.
Has a Record of 7-3, Raiders Finish 11-5
4 of 4Right now Oakland sits at 4-2 and is currently second place in the AFC West behind the 4-1 San Diego Chargers.
With Kyle Boller under center, there's no way defenses would respect the passing game. Darren McFadden would see eight guys in the box every game for the remainder of the season.
In turn, Oakland would have finished 9-7 at best.
Carson Palmer is good for at least two more wins, if not more, because of his throwing ability and that he's a vehemently more-established NFL QB.
He makes the Raiders' offense a lot more versatile and dynamic, so it'll be interesting how defenses adjust with him now at the helm.
Nonetheless, Oakland is going to make the postseason. However, that is where Carson Palmer has struggled the most.
