NFL Week 7: Who's Hot, Who's Not at the QB Position
We all know that this is a quarterback league, evident in four of the last five NFL drafts where a QB was selected as the first overall pick. More times than not, if you don't have a solid QB, you're a bottom feeder in this league.
Week 7 of the NFL didn't exactly prove my point, as some of the best quarterback's in the league struggled, though there were a few exceptions. Here's a list of some Week 7 standouts at the quarterback position.
Aaron Rodgers
1 of 6Aaron Rodgers is on top of the football world right now. This is his sixth-straight performance with a QB rating over 100 and you have to wonder when this guy is going to slow down.
Against the St. Louis Rams yesterday, Rodgers completed a little over 60 percent of his passes and tossed three touchdowns to only one INT. Rodgers also threw for 310 yards, making it the fifth time out of six games this season that he has 300 yards or more passing.
While I still believe Brady is the best quarterback in the league, Aaron Rodgers is far and away the more accurate QB. In a year or two, Rodgers will definitely take the mantle from Brady as the best quarterback in this league.
Alex Smith
2 of 6Alex Smith has had a resurgent season under head coach Jim Harbaugh and Week 7 showed why. Old Alex Smith was present in this game as he overthrew a couple of passes but the last play symbolized Harbaugh's trust in Alex.
Alex only completed about 53 percent of his passes for a measly 125 yards, but that clutch throw at the end put the Niners up for good against a fiery Detroit Lions team.
Josh Freeman
3 of 6Josh Freeman played great yesterday in the Bucs upset win over the New Orleans Saints. Freeman finished with a 95.2 quarterback rating and threw for 302 yards and two TDs (no picks). After his horrid performance against the 49ers last week, Freeman was very effective against an opportunistic Saints secondary.
He completely outperformed Drew Brees in their first divisional matchup of the season, and the Bucs are now atop the NFC South at 4-2.
Andy Dalton
4 of 6Rookie quarterback Andy Dalton has led the Cincinnati Bengals to 4-2 record despite the hoopla involving the Carson Palmer fiasco. In yesterday's win against the Colts, Dalton finished with a quarterback rating of 111.5, completing 25 of his 32 passing attempts for 264 yards and a touchdown.
Dalton is flourishing in Jay Gruden's version of the West Coast offense and yet doesn't get the same amount of publicity as his fellow rookie counterpart Cam Newton. While Palmer and owner Mike Brown continue their bickering battle, Dalton simply continues to win.
Jay Cutler
5 of 6Cutler deserves a ton of credit for playing with such a beat up line. He played a second consecutive solid game, after finishing with a quarterback rating of 115.9 and throwing for two TDs with zero INTs.
If the Bears want to maximize Cutler's potential, they'll have to find him some more weapons at receiver and also continue building that O-line.
Tom Brady
6 of 6Tom Brady was simply clutch in yesterday's win against the Dallas Cowboys. Defensive coordinator Rob Ryan devised a great plan in confusing Brady for most of the afternoon, but couldn't get it done when it mattered the most.
Brady was surgical in the Patriots final drive, as he completed the series with a beautiful throw to tight end Aaron Hernandez for a touchdown to put his team up for good. Tom Brady is as clutch of a quarterback as you're ever going to find.
