NFL Week 6: 5 Things We Learned

Professor BushOct 16, 2011

Every week in the NFL season we learn or re-learn some important things. This week was no exception.

Tom Brady is still the best two-minute-drill quarterback.

In this week's comeback win over the Dallas Cowboys, Brady led the team 80 yards for the winning touchdown using just a little over two minutes of clock time. He completed eight of nine passes to four different receivers in the winning drive.

This was the classical execution of the two-minute drill.

The San Francisco 49ers are a very good team.

(Yes, fans, this is a repeat of a key learning from Week 5, but the 49ers deserve this mention again.) They now have won three games on the road in the fourth quarter, against the Philadelphia Eagles, Cincinnati Bengals, and this week against the previously undefeated Detroit Lions.  That is a very impressive record.  The only blemish on their record so far is the overtime loss to the Cowboys.

It is not too early to start talking about the 49ers being a candidate for a first round bye in the playoffs.

The Washington Redskins are not a contender with Rex Grossman at quarterback.

Today he threw four interceptions, which played a major role in the Redskins loss to the Eagles.

More important than the number of interceptions was how they occurred. Grossman was not under a lot of pressure, no defensive back jumped a short route, and no lineman tipped a pass. All four of the interceptions were made by safeties downfield, as a result of either throwing into double coverage or a poorly thrown pass.

The Baltimore Ravens defense is second to none.

After this week's game, the Ravens are giving up only 14 points per game on average, which leads the league. Even the Houston Texans' tandem running attack of Arian Foster and Ben Tate could not solve the Ravens' physical defense this week.

We will not have two undefeated teams playing on Thanksgiving.

Most years we don't worry about the Lions' game when we schedule Thanksgiving Dinner.

This year with the Packers versus the Lions on the schedule, we might have to do so. It should be a good game with significant playoff implications, but now we know that there will not be two undefeated teams involved.
