Rex Grossman, Vince Young and 3 Guys Who Talk Big, Play Small
As was keenly on display Sunday afternoon, Washington Redskins quarterback Rex Grossman loves to talk big, but when the rubber hits the road, the human interception machine often comes up woefully short.
Here is a list of guys, like Grossman, who love to talk big but rarely, if ever, back up that jawing with results on the field.
Rex Grossman
1 of 5Grossman has to lead off this list. The starting quarterback for the Washington Redskins has never been one of keep quiet. This year has been no exception, as Grossman opened the season by proclaiming that his Redskins were the clear favorites in what appeared to be a stacked NFC East.
His bravado appeared to be warranted through the season's first few weeks as Washington clawed its way to a 3-1 record and the top spot in the division. Then on Sunday, it all came crashing down.
Facing the 1-4 Philadelphia Eagles, the Redskins quarterback went all "Rex Grossman" and destroyed any chance his team had of winning the game.
He finished the afternoon completing nine of 22 passes for 143 yards, with no touchdowns and four interceptions. His quarterback rating of 23.7 was horrendous, but what was worse is that John Beck ended up replacing him and completely outplaying him.
Here's some free advice for Mr. Grossman: When your career quarterback rating is 71.8, don't ever, ever talk trash, because it will come back to bite you.
Vince Young
2 of 5Vince Young isn't even a starter for the Philadelphia Eagles, but before the season, he made the mistake of referring to his squad as a "Dream Team."
Then he continued:
"From Nnamdi (Asomugha) to (Dominique Rodgers-) Cromartie, to Jason (Babin), to myself," Young continued, "I know they are going to do some things...It's just beautiful to see where we're trying to go."
Um Vince, what exactly makes you think your name belongs in the same sentence with those other guys?
Well, Young got his chance to play during a regular season game for the "Dream Team" today, as starting quarterback Michael Vick left the contest after taking a hard hit from Washington's LaRon Landry.
Young took two snaps, a two-yard scramble, then threw an interception. Nicely done, Vince. Way to come up big when your team needed you.
Chad Ochocinco
3 of 5Chad Ochocinco has always been one of the league's biggest trash talkers. Whether through Twitter or his his pre-planned touchdown celebrations, the receiver has always been entertaining or infuriating, depending on your perspective.
While his talking has continued over the past few seasons, his production has not. Over the past three seasons (since 2008), Ochocinco has caught 53, 72 and 67 passes, and has had a total of just 17 touchdowns. Those aren't numbers worthy of the Hall of Fame-level boasting he's done.
Through five games this year (entering Week 6) with the New England Patriots, the 33-year-old wideout has just nine catches for 136 yards and no touchdowns.
While he may end up getting things going with the Patriots, he really hasn't looked good and has dropped several sure catches. We'll see if he can ever elevate his game back to the standard his mouth and actions have set for him.
Brandon Marshall
4 of 5So Brandon Marshall says he doesn't care what people think or if he has several cameras on him or even if he gets thrown out of the team's Monday night game against the rival New York Jets.
Marshall continued:
""I'm not joking. I'm serious. They want to fine me, hit me with a $50,000 fine. I'm going to play. The quarter and a half I'm out there, I'm going to play like a monster. I might get into a fight with Bart Scott. (Antonio) Cromartie, we pretty much matured out relationship a bit. We used to fight in Denver and San Diego. If that happens, it happens. We'll see."
"
I know Marshall is actually legitimately crazy and has borderline personality disorder, but actually telling the press you plan on getting into a fight and getting ejected from a game? Uh, that's even a little more crazy than I'm willing to deal with.
If Marshall was putting up amazing numbers, we would all just think of him as "colorful," but instead, he has been a huge disappointment since being traded to the Miami Dolphins from the Denver Broncos in 2010.
This year, Marshall has 22 catches for 313 yards and just one touchdown though four games. Those numbers are pedestrian at best.
If you're going to pop off, you better have the numbers to back that kind of talk up. Marshall just doesn't right now.
Rex Ryan
5 of 5Whether you love or hate New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan, you know that the man talks a big game. While his team has been to the AFC title game the past two seasons, the Jets have fallen short of their ultimate goal, a Super Bowl championship.
This season, despite more big talk, Ryan's bunch has opened the season 2-3 and currently sits in third place in the NFC East behind both the hated New England Patriots and Buffalo Bills.
Ryan has gone everywhere from poking the New England Patriots to sly jabs at the Baltimore Ravens; nothing seems to be off limits for the outspoken coach.
But until the Jets end up winning a Super Bowl with Ryan at the helm, he'll never be able to back up the amount of talking he has done.
