NFL Picks Week 6: Green Bay Packers and Sunday's 2 Safest Picks

Ryan PhillipsOct 16, 2011

The Green Bay Packers have raced to a 5-0 record and have clearly shown themselves to be the best team in the NFL so far. On Sunday, they will face the 0-4 St. Louis Rams, and are all but guaranteed to continue their winning ways. Along with two other teams, the Packers are one of this week's safest picks.

Green Bay is led by quarterback Aaron Rodgers, whose 122.9 quarterback rating is the NFL's best by more than 13 points (Tom Brady is second at 109.5). Rodgers' mastery of opposing defenses has been impressive to watch, and don't expect anything less on Sunday at home against the Rams.

The Packers offense has averaged 428.6 yards per game (fourth in the NFL) through the first five weeks of the season, while scoring a league-high 34.6 points per game. They will be facing a Rams defense that is giving up 404.5 yards (27th in the NFL) and 28.3 points (31st) per game.

That combination tells me that the Packers will cruise to 6-0, while St. Louis will drop to 0-5.

The New England Patriots are currently 4-1 and face the disappointing 2-2 Dallas Cowboys at home on Sunday. It's hard to ever bet against Tom Brady at home, and I wouldn't even think of doing it now.

The Cowboys are one of the league's most inconsistent squads on both sides of the ball and they won't be able to slow down the Patriots, especially on offense.

Brady leads the NFL's top-ranked offense, averaging 495.2 yards per game. While the Cowboys are only giving up 291.8 yards per game on defense (fourth in the NFL), they are surrendering an average of 25.3 points (23rd in the league).

Given the way quarterback Tony Romo has struggled turning the ball over, Brady and company should roll in this one.

The Pittsburgh Steelers improved to 3-2 in Week 5 by blasting the Tennessee Titans, 38-17. After a horrendous start to the season, the Steelers appear to be back on track. On Sunday they face a 1-4 Jacksonville Jaguars team that is still breaking in rookie quarterback Blaine Gabbert.

Expect the Steelers' defense to attack Gabbert early and often, and it's really hard to see the rookie weathering the storm. Jacksonville's offense currently ranks dead last in the NFL, averaging just 270.6 yards per game, while the Steelers boast the league's second-best defense (282.8 yards per game).

Those numbers don't bode well for the Jags and their young signal-caller. Expect Pittsburgh to roll to a win.
